Government Headquarters

Located on Avenida Praia Grande, the Macao SAR Government Headquarters, which covers an area of 7,700 square meters, comprises three buildings with a total floor area of 10,000 square meters.

The front block of the Headquarters (former Government Palace) is a two-storey mansion where the Chief Executive and the secretaries receive guests and hold various official functions. The ground floor of the building accommodates the conference room of the Executive Council, the Lotus Room, a multi-purpose conference room and a pressroom. The first floor accommodates the office of the Chief Executive, the Green Room, the Yellow Room and the Blue Room, as well as the secretariat of the Executive Council.

The mansion was built in 1849 and was bought at MOP21,000 in 1881 by the Portuguese-Macao government. Since then it had been used by Portuguese governors of Macao as their official residence and later as their office. After Macau returned to China on December 20th 1999, the SAR Government renovated the mansion, preserving its original achitectural style and features.

The six-storey rear block is the main administration building while the middle block houses the office of the support staffs.

Some 20,000 visitors visited the building during 23 and 24 June 2001, when the building was open to the public for the first time after renovations.
