HSBC MEGA HONG KONG SALE UNITES COMMUNITY IN SHOPPING FRENZY

Every sector of the community - including Government officials, trade representatives, retailers and members of the entertainment industry - teamed up today (9 June) to ensure that the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale is the SAR's largest and longest shopping promotion ever.

Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive The Hon Tung Chee Hwa, patron of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB)'s City of Life: Hong Kong is it! tourism campaign officiated at the ceremony.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Tung said tourism is a key element for Hong Kong's economy and the entire community could support this major shopping promotion by being good hosts to visitors. "I invite visitors from all over the world to come and discover the diversity of experiences Hong Kong offers you," Mr Tung added. 

Attending the ceremony were HKTB Chairman The Hon Mrs Selina Chow, JP; Chief Executive of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Mr Lawrence Wong, representing The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Principal Sponsor for City of Life: Hong Kong is it!; General Manager of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited Mr Raymond Or; Secretary for Economic Services and City of Life: Hong Kong is it! Vice-Patron Ms Sandra Lee, JP; Commissioner for Tourism Mrs Rebecca Lai, JP; Deputy Director of Home Affairs Miss Janet Wong; Chairman of the Organising Committee of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign, Mr Philip Chen, JP; and HKTB Executive Director Ms Clara Chong.

Earlier this afternoon in Golden Bauhinia Square, General Manager of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Mr Raymond Or presented four international stars with credit cards at the launch ceremony. 

Spearheading the HKTB's massive publicity drive with a celebrity shopping spree were Ms Nancy Kwan from the United States; Ms Yuriko Ishida from Japan; City of Life: Hong Kong is it! Ambassador, Mr Aaron Kwok; and Miss Hong Kong 2001 Second Runner-up and Miss International Goodwill, Miss Heidi Chu. 

Speaking at the ceremony, HKTB Chairman Mrs Selina Chow said that the various events of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign highlighted Hong Kong's multi-faceted tourism attractions. "Through the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale, we are capitalising on Hong Kong's well-established reputation as a shopping destination and demonstrating the diversity of the shopping experience to visitors worldwide," she said. 

Mrs Chow added that the four celebrities - representing two major visitor source markets and Hong Kong itself - had been specially invited by the HKTB to boost publicity worldwide. The stars will explore different areas to enjoy four different themes of the Hong Kong shopping experience. 

Mr Or said that the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale is more than just 11 weeks of shopping at great prices. "It is an opportunity to help stimulate Hong Kong's retail business environment. It is an opportunity to reinforce Hong Kong's status as a shopping paradise, and an opportunity to significantly increase the number of visitors coming to see our dynamic and energetic city," he said. 

Mr Or added that, as title sponsor, HSBC was proud to be associated with this exciting initiative. "We believe the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale will bring many benefits - direct benefits to participating retailers and indirect benefits to all retail businesses in Hong Kong." 

Each of the four celebrities was also given an HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale Visitor Privilege Card by the HKTB's Board Member, Mr Patrick Yeung and Executive Director Ms Clara Chong. The stars went on to perform the eye-dotting of four lions symbolising the four shopping themes before heading out to choose gifts for themselves and their families and friends. 

Having great interest in Chinese traditions, Ms Kwan purchased Chinese tea for a friend. She also bought a jade horse for her aunt and dried mushrooms for herself. Miss Chu's preference was for jewellery and watches. She chose a gold bracelet for her mother and a watch for her friend. She also bought herself a gold statuette.

Ms Ishida picked up fashion and beauty products: a Chinese cheongsam for herself and a pair of matching shoes, as well as a handbag for her sister and some clothes for her friend. Always up-to-date with the latest technology trends, Aaron Kwok looked for consumer electronics. He purchased for himself a new personal organiser, a mobile phone for his mother, and a digital video camera for his assistant. 

The four categories of merchandise will be showcased during the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale. Fashion and Beauty promotions begin on 15 June and continue to 5 July, during which visitors can enjoy free admission to designer fashion shows and skin care and beauty classes.

The spotlight will be on Jewellery and Watches between 6 July and 26 July. Highlights from this period include gemstone / jadeite identification and appreciation classes, watch exhibitions and tours of the world's most expensive gold washroom. Visitors and residents will also receive an unprecedented HK$100 discount per tael on gold and platinum jewellery and a 5% discount on the negotiated price of other jewellery at participating outlets. 

Products representing Consumer Electronics will be showcased from 27 July to 16 August, with audio-visual product expositions featuring the latest models of mobile phones, computers, cameras and other trendy electronic merchandise. 

The final theme will be Chinese Traditions (17 August - 31 August). During this period, a series of classes featuring bird's nest recipes, dried seafood and tonic foods and Chinese tea as well as cultural activities such as antique appreciation, tai chi, feng shui, and Heritage and Architecture Walks.

The biggest shopping promotion ever held in Hong Kong, HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale has the support of more than 900 participating merchants representing over 2,100 retail outlets. All participating outlets will bear an emblem for easy recognition. Upon presentation of a privilege card, tourist shoppers will receive extra discounts or other special offers.

Creating even more incentive to spend for visitors and residents are special daily and grand lucky draws with prizes totalling more than HK$10 million. Shoppers are entitled to one entry in the lucky draw for every HK$300 they spend at participating outlets. 

In the daily lucky draw, a winning visitor will receive two return air-tickets from Cathay Pacific Airways or Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, while Hong Kong residents will receive 15cm gold statuettes, courtesy of 3D-GOLD. At the end of the promotion, visitors and residents have the chance to win in the grand lucky draw 10-carat diamond jewellery worth HK$1 million. Each participating merchant with a prize-winning visitor customer will also receive special prizes.

The event's Lucky Draw Major Prize Sponsor is 3D-GOLD and the Official Mobile Communicator is Orange. The Official Public Transport is MTR Corporation Limited. The Official Digital Products Sponsor is Samsung Electronics Hong Kong Company Limited and the Official Logistics Company is Oriental Logistics Company Limited. There is a host of other organisations providing attractive prizes.

The HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale is the fourth major programme of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign, organised by the HKTB in co-operation with the Hong Kong SAR Government's Home Affairs Department, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Tourism Commission, with the support of the 18 District Councils and with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as Principal Sponsor.
