STARS GO ON SHOPPING SPREE FOR HSBC MEGA HONG KONG SALE

7 June 2002

Four international stars are adding strength to the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) launch this Sunday (9 June) of the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale, the SAR's longest and largest shopping promotion.

Spearheading the HKTB's massive publicity drive with a celebrity shopping spree are Ms Nancy Kwan from the United States; Ms Yuriko Ishida from Japan; City of Life: Hong Kong is it! Ambassador, Mr Aaron Kwok; and Miss Heidi Chu, Miss Hong Kong 2001 Second Runner-up and Miss International Goodwill.

The stars will attend a ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, where they will be presented with credit cards from the programme's title sponsor, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.

Following the ceremony, the stars will go on shopping excursions to choose gifts or mementos for themselves and their loved ones, highlighting the vast variety of products and unique shopping experiences available in Hong Kong.

Nancy Kwan, star of the 1960s classic The World of Suzie Wong and the first Asian actress to succeed in Western cinema, will be purchasing products representing Chinese Traditions, including Chinese handicrafts. "Health is vital for happiness," Ms Kwan said. "Chinese tonic food, dried seafood and medicine are said to be rejuvenating. These products, as well as Chinese arts and crafts, are perfect souvenirs to bring home for friends and loved ones."

Ms Yuriko Ishida in Japanese TV series See You in Kowloon will pick up fashion and beauty products and see for herself the diversity of Hong Kong's trend-setting scene. "Every woman wants to look beautiful. Count me in! In Hong Kong, I can easily find the trendiest fashion labels, as well as globally renowned beauty products that suit my style."

Miss Heidi Chu's preference is for jewellery and watches, a popular product category with visitors, bolstered by a purity assurance of gold products in Hong Kong. "Shopping for these items in Hong Kong is exciting because of the many versatile designs and styles available here."

Always up to date with the latest technology trends, City of Life: Hong Kong is it! Ambassador Mr Aaron Kwok looks for Consumer Electronics products. "Advances in modern communications and electronics move almost literally with the speed of light. There is a new product every day, especially mobile phones, hand-held personal organisers and video cameras. When you go techno-browsing in Hong Kong, you are on the cutting edge of the future."

Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) will broadcast the launch, featuring the celebrity shopping excursions and a song-and-dance performance, on Jade Channel between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm Sunday evening. TVBS will relay the programme to different parts of the world, including Mainland China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and parts of Europe.

Hong Kong's longest and largest shopping promotion, the 11-week HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale has already set a number of new records. It has been well received by the retail sector reflecting their strong support to the tourism industry. The HKTB is urging the community to participate in the event and to offer quality services and to be good hosts to visitors.

There are more than 2,100 participating outlets, representing over 900 retail merchants. All participating outlets will bear an emblem for easy recognition. With more than 40 supporting bodies, it has the largest number of participating organisations and government departments.

The programme has fabulous lucky draw prizes, totalling more than HK$10 million. Shoppers are entitled to one entry in the lucky draw for every HK$300 they spend at participating outlets.

In the daily lucky draw, a winning visitor will receive two return air-tickets from Cathay Pacific Airways or Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, while Hong Kong residents will receive 15cm gold statuettes, courtesy of "3D-Gold". At the end of the promotion, visitors and residents have the chance to win in the grand lucky draw 10-carat diamond jewellery worth HK$1 million.

This is also the first time where merchants will be rewarded. Each participating merchant with a prize-winning visitor customer receives a banquet for 10 from Hong Kong Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant Limited and a mobile phone from Orange. A merchant with a resident customer winning a prize will receive a mobile phone from Orange.

During the jewellery and watches promotion between 6 July and 26 July, visitors and locals will enjoy an unprecedented HK$100 discount per tael on gold and platinum jewellery and a 5% discount on the negotiated price of other jewellery at Hong Kong Jewellers' and Goldsmiths' Association and The Kowloon Pearls, Precious Stones, Jade, Gold and Silver Ornament Merchants Association member outlets.

HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale incorporates the latest information-dissemination technology. Visitors who use the programme's Official Mobile Communicator Orange's roaming service can obtain lucky draw results daily via its mobile phone short message service. Visitors can also obtain information on theme-related events on their mobiles at specific venues through a "Location-based Messaging Service".

In order to broaden visitors' shopping experiences during the period, the HKTB has lined up numerous events to tie in with four shopping themes - an unprecedented number of supporting activities for any similar programme. Apart from designer fashion shows especially for visitors, there will be numerous free special interest classes on such topics as skin care and beauty, gemstone / jadeite / pearl identification and appreciation, antique appreciation, Chinese tea appreciation, bird's nest recipes and tonic foods, and tai chi, feng shui and kung-fu demonstrations.

Other related activities include Heritage & Architecture Walks; audio-visual product expositions as well as free admission to the Beauty and Fitness Exposition, the Hong Kong Jewellery & Watch Fair; Asia's Fashion Jewellery and Accessories Fair, and the comic festival.

The HKTB will be providing extensive visitor services through 15 Visitor Hospitality Kiosks at major shopping malls, department stores and tourist areas. Some of the kiosks will offer "little surprises" such as free five-minute head and neck massages.

Two free shuttle bus routes specially for visitors will operate for the first time on Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula, stopping at several major shopping districts and providing tourist and shopping information on board.

The HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale is the fourth major programme of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign, organised by the HKTB in co-operation with the Hong Kong SAR Government's Home Affairs Department, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Tourism Commission, with the support of the 18 District Councils and with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as Principal Sponsor.
