NEW EIGHT-LANE ROADWAY MAKES TRAVEL TO NEWARK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT MORE CONVENIENT

6 June 2002

Continental Airlines and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey today announced the completion of an eight-lane roadway that more than doubles the number of lanes serving drivers coming to Newark International Airport. The public agency and the airline industry leader are working together to provide $3.8 billion in customer improvements.

The new roads connect to Continental Airlines' recently renovated Terminal C. As part of Continental's $900 million Global Gateway expansion, the two-level Terminal C was converted into an ultra-modern three-level facility. Terminal C now has two levels serving international and domestic departures and a third, lower level with baggage claim and ground transportation facilities serving arriving passengers.

The roads are part of New York/Newark's $480 million roadway improvement program. The project increases the number of available lanes for cars and taxis serving arriving customers at Terminal C from three to five.

This summer, upon the completion of a new roadway connecting Terminals B and C, the Port Authority will open three additional lanes to bus traffic. The capacity of departure-level roadways has already more than doubled to seven lanes from the previous three.

"Our ability to work with industry leaders like Continental Airlines is vital to maintaining the airport's ability to keep pace with the region's air transportation needs," said Susan Baer, General Manager of Newark International Airport.

"Continental's work as project manager for this Port-funded roadway is another example of the extraordinary public/private partnership that has led to wide-ranging improvements for travelers through Newark International," said Charles Scully, Vice President of Continental's New York/Newark hub. "With completion of the Terminal C roadway expansion, the region's most modern airport facility becomes even more accessible."

The roadway expansion follows the Port Authority's inauguration of AirTrain Newark, the new rail link that provides direct rail access to Newark International Airport's three terminals from New York City and points across New Jersey.

Continental is New York's largest passenger carrier, flying more than 20 million customers a year in and out of the region. With more than 310 daily departures from Newark alone, Continental accounts for more than 60 percent of the airport's flights. Continental flies from Newark to 118 domestic and international cities, including frequent non-stops to Europe, Latin America and Asia.
