Singapore Airlines (SIA) has been ranked number one in the Large Airline category by Aviation Week & Space Technology in the magazine's Top-Performing Companies study. This is the second year running that SIA has received the award.
Aviation Week & Space Technology is an American publication that is widely read by members of the airline and aerospace industry. Its annual Top-Performing Companies study is based on its proprietary Competitiveness Index, which focuses on publicly-traded companies' key performance measures, including asset utilization, productivity and financial health.
According to Aviation Week & Space Technology's Executive Vice President, Kenneth E. Gazzola, "airlines and aerospace/defence companies succeed, or fail, based on how well they implement a well-thought-out business strategy, and the carriers and contractors ranked number one in their respective categories in the study demonstrated a common trait: an ability to execute, with few missteps, in a difficult operating environment".
In its July issue, the magazine noted that "for airlines, establishing their relative performance for 2001 proved to be especially challenging because of the financial upheaval caused by the September 11 terrorist attacks. The names of the top-ranked carriers this year are apt to resonate with individuals familiar with the sector and the ferocious competition that has become deeply ingrained in this service business".
Other awards
In May, SIA was placed first in the 'Best Leisure Airline' category at The Guardian/Observer Travel Awards 2002. SIA achieved a score of 86.16 and moved up one notch from last year's second placing.
SIA also performed well in South Korea's National Consumer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) Survey in April. The Airline has held on to pole position in the International Airlines Service Category for five consecutive years. |
