30 years on from Darwin's Cyclone Tracy disaster, and Holiday Inn Darwin is still using cranes to move cars around - only this time it was a Holden Racing Team V8 Supercar that was finding its way
poolside.
The now-famous photos of cars sent flying into the pool of the now Holiday Inn Darwin were brought back into focus as the two star drivers of the Holden Racing Team, Mark Skaife and Jason Bright supervised the lifting of one of their V8 Supercars into the hotel's pool area to mark Round 4 of the Australian and New Zealand V8 Supercar competition, which took place in Darwin in May.
Holiday Inn is the official accommodation sponsor for the Holden Racing Team, a relationship that has become the longest formal sporting alliance in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific for Six Continents Hotels - owner of the Holiday Inn brand.
Mark Skaife and Jason Bright met with guests of Holiday Inn Darwin and gave a few inside racing tips behind the wheel of the competition vehicle in one of their very few official engagements as part of the fourth leg of the V8 Supercar series.
"We had comments from many local residents who recall the photographs and events of 30 years ago. This time around, our guests got to have a taste of what it's like to be behind the wheel of a supercar when it's flying around a track, rather than through the air!" said Six Continents Hotels' Chief Operating Officer for Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, Phil Lee.
"We've been associated with the Holden Racing Team for a very long time, and it's great that our guests can be part of that relationship. Mark and Jason are both extraordinary sportsmen and we will continue to support them and the team as the V8 Supercar calendar continues throughout 2002," Mr Lee said.
The event was one of the last official functions planned for the pool area, which is soon to be upgraded as part of the hotel's ongoing refurbishment program. The most significant changes include transformation of the existing Terrace Restaurant into conference and function facilities and establishment of a new Business Centre and Administration Offices within the hotel. Tracey's Restaurant / Bar and Kitchen has already been upgraded and overlooks the pool area.
The refurbishment is being overseen by General Manager, Tony Mahon who was recently named General Manager of the Year for both Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific and for the Asia Pacific region as part of the international Six Continents Hotels Awards. |
