Cathay Pacific supports job training scheme

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced that it will create 10 initial openings to support the Hong Kong Government-backed "one company one job" initiative to provide work experience to Hong Kong's university graduates.

These paid positions at the airline's Hong Kong headquarters will give young people a chance to acquire the kind of job experience that will help them get ahead in the world of work.

This comes in addition to Cathay Pacific's previously announced commitment to the Young Work Experience and Training Scheme, under which the airline will provide 30 people aged between 15 and 24 up to a year's on-the-job training to help them build a future career.

Cathay Pacific Director Personnel William Chau is heading up a special taskforce that will manage their placement. 

Cathay Pacific is meanwhile continuing with plans to hire more than 1,000 people locally. This month, training commenced for 200 newly hired cabin crew. Another 800 will be hired over the next two years. Between now and December 2003 Cathay Pacific will take on 235 pilots both from its Hong Kong cadet training scheme and a pool of qualified overseas pilots. And over the next six months, 130 Customer Services Officers will be recruited to work at Hong Kong International Airport.

Cathay Pacific Director and Chief Operating Officer Philip Chen said: "This initiative is another way in which Cathay Pacific can extend its commitment to the future of Hong Kong by contributing to the continued development of a better-trained workforce. We are pleased to give youngsters the chance to acquire skills they can use to build a career."
