Visitors to Hong Kong should find an even greater range of the very latest electronic products this summer. A three-week promotion launched on 27 July by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) as part of the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale will showcase the latest in "hi-tech" merchandise available in the City of Life.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, HKTB Executive Director Ms Clara Chong said Hong Kong, deservedly known as the "shoppers' paradise", offers a huge selection of consumer electronics.
"Two shopping themes have been effectively highlighted since the launch of the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale mid-June," Ms Chong said. "Starting from 27 July, we place another popular product category - Consumer Electronics - in the spotlight. Hong Kong's reputation as a shopping paradise ensures that the city constantly features the very latest cutting-edge products. Together with our unbeatable services, they make shopping in Hong Kong even more appealing," she added.
The HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale has received feverish responses from visitors and local residents, with nearly one million visitor privilege cards having been distributed so far, Ms Chong said.
Also attending the event were HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale's title sponsor, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited's Senior Executive & Deputy Head of Personal Financial Services, Mr Dicky Yip, and special celebrity guests, actor Mr Moses Chan and pop singers Ms Candy Lo.
The ceremony featured a demonstration by Moses Chan of a new computer game and performances by Candy Lo.
Nearly 230 electronic product shops, representing more than 120 merchants, are involved in the Consumer Electronics promotion. Among them, over 120 are outlets in the Quality Tourism Services (QTS) Scheme, which accounts for 52% of participating merchants.
The three-week promotion has won strong support from the Hong Kong and Kowloon Electrical Appliances Merchants Association Limited, the Radio Association of Hong Kong, Times Square and New Town Plaza.
One of two audio-visual product expositions began on Friday at Times Square in Causeway Bay and ended on Sunday evening. A second expo will be held at New Town Plaza, from 2 August to 4 August. Both feature dozens of well-known brands: Canon, Fuji, Fujitsu, LG, Hitachi, JVC, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Philips, Samsung, Sharp and Sony.
During the 11-week HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale, more than 2,100 participating retail outlets are providing customers with a range of offers such as a "discount on discount" (an extra discount of at least 5% on discounted items), free gifts upon purchase, or special promotional items.
To enjoy these offers, visitors in Hong Kong can obtain HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale Visitor Privilege Cards from the HKTB's Visitor Information and Services Centres and from 13 Visitor Hospitality Kiosks at various shopping malls and department stores around Hong Kong.
Creating even more incentive to spend are special daily and grand lucky draws with prizes totalling more than HK$10 million. Shoppers can redeem one lucky draw ticket for every HK$300 they spend at Privilege Card outlets.
In each daily lucky draw, one winning visitor receives two return air tickets from
Cathay Pacific Airways or Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, while one Hong Kong resident receives a 15cm gold statuette, courtesy of 3D-GOLD. At the end of the promotion, both visitors and residents have the chance to win 10-carat diamond jewellery worth HK$1 million in the grand lucky draw. This unique prize, also courtesy of 3D-GOLD, adopts the design of Hong Kong's "Asia's World City" icon - an energetic dragon.
The HKTB is actively marketing the programme through a host of channels, with promotional materials distributed at major entry points, hotels, and through its Visitor Information and Services Centres and Visitor Hospitality Kiosks. These include some 450,000 visitor guides, 330,000 lucky draw leaflets and more than 2,300 posters.
As of 26 July, 40 visitors have won the daily lucky draw prizes since mid-June. Eighteen are from Mainland China, five from the United States, three each from Taiwan and The Philippines, two from Japan, and one each from Australia, Denmark, New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Indonesia.
The HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale has as its title sponsor The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. The event's Lucky Draw Major Prize Sponsor is 3D-GOLD and the Official Mobile Communicator is Orange. The Official Public Transport is MTR Corporation Limited. The Official Digital Products Sponsor is Samsung Electronics Hong Kong Company Limited and the Official Logistics Company is Oriental Logistics Company Limited. There is a host of other organisations providing attractive prizes.
The HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale is the fourth major programme of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign, organised by the HKTB in co-operation with the Hong Kong SAR Government's Home Affairs Department, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Tourism Commission, with the support of the 18 District Councils and with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as Principal Sponsor.
