A major tourism promotion of Hong Kong was launched in Shandong Province, China, today (28 May) capitalising on growing Mainland interest in Hong Kong as a tourist destination, events associated with the forthcoming fifth anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the launch of Hong Kong's first shopping festival.
Led by the Shandong China Travel Service, the promotion entitled in Putonghua "Hong Kong Welcomes 10,000 Shandong Travellers", aims to see 10,000 extra tourists from the province visit Hong Kong this year.
The launch took place at the Sofitel Silver Plaza in Jinan. The guests of honour were the HKSAR Government's Commissioner for Tourism Mrs Rebecca Lai, JP; Deputy Director of the Office of the Government of the HKSAR in Beijing, Mr Tam Wing Pong, JP; Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) Executive Director Ms Clara Chong; Chairman of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong Mr Ronnie Yuen; Deputy Director of the Shandong Provincial Tourism Bureau Ms Zhu Li Min; and Deputy General Manager of the Shandong China Travel Service, Ms Ma

Speaking at the ceremony, HKTB Executive Director Ms Clara Chong said Shandong was an important visitor source market for Hong Kong. "It is a heavily populated province and, with its rapidly developing economy, possesses great development potential," Ms Chong said. "The HKTB will spare no effort to further strengthen its co-operation with Mainland trade partners in order to fully showcase Hong Kong's tourist attractions to the people of
Shandong."
Ms Chong added that the launch of "Hong Kong Welcomes 10,000 Shandong Travellers" promotion coincides with the HKTB's City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign programme, the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale, which begins next month when visitors can truly experience this world-renowned shoppers' paradise.
