Dragonair posted healthy increases in both passenger and cargo traffic in April. Year-on-year passenger numbers for the month were up 13.70%, while freight volumes surged 60.04%
The airline carried 296,797 passengers in the month, compared with 261,041 in April 2001. The figure was also 8.28% higher on a month-on-month basis, with 274,102 passengers flown in March 2002.
Dragonair carried 14,927 tonnes of cargo in April 2002, and 9,327 tonnes in the same month last year. Month-on-month volumes were off just 3.37%, with March being a peak month with 15,447 tonnes carried.
"This is the best start to a year in terms of passenger and cargo uplift that we've ever had," said Stanley Hui, Chief Executive Officer of
Dragonair.
In the first four months of 2002 Dragonair carried 1,002,879 passengers compared with 889,830 in the same period last year, representing growth of 12.70%.
Cargo growth was an even more impressive 59.18%, with 50,576 tonnes carried between January and April this year and 31,773 tonnes in the same period in 2001.
"One of the reasons for the good April passenger figure was the number of conferences being held in the mainland, especially in Beijing and Shanghai. As we expected, there is a lot of interest in the country following its accession to the WTO," Mr. Hui said. "In addition, group traffic from Hong Kong and Taiwan was very strong."
Turning to cargo, he said, "The import and export figures in April rose strongly with a corresponding recovery in the air cargo market, ensuring the figure for April was ahead of expectations after coming off the peak month of March. All in all, it's a great foundation with which to head into the remainder of the year."
Dragonair is a Hong Kong-based airline, operating a fleet of seven A330-300s, four A321s and eight A320s, in addition to two Boeing 747-300 freighters.
