Continuing the momentum in traffic recovery, AAPA international scheduled passenger traffic produced yet another positive, albeit small gain, with revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) rising by 0.3% year-on-year in April. The number of passengers carried, reflecting an increase more in short haul traffic, increased 2.9% year-on-year. The capacity was 4.3% below that of April 2001, leading to a 3.5-percentage point gain in load factor, to 75.1%.
Traffic within the Asia Pacific region grew by 3.8% while traffic between Asia Pacific and Europe increased 6.6%. However, the Transpacific traffic, with a double-digit decline of 11.4%, continued to be the only major route still suffering from the impact of September 11.
The markedly improved freight market propelled AAPA international freight traffic to a growth rate of 15.5% year-on-year - the first double-digit growth since September 2000. The load factor climbed to 68.0% - a gain of 7.3 percentage points - as the capacity increased moderately, by 3.3%.
