British Airways Appoints Fernando Suarez as General Manager Greater China & the Philippines

26 June 2002

British Airways today announced the appointment of Fernando Suarez as General Manager, Greater China & the Philippines, effective immediately. Based in Hong Kong, Fernando will report to Jenny Lourey, Area General Manager Asia Pacific.

This position replaces the previous role of General Manager East Asia, and reflects the growing strategic importance of Greater China as a region. As General Manager of Greater China and the Philippines, Mr. Suarez will be responsible for the strategic development and commercial performance of British Airways in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the Philippines. Working in tandem with other regional managers, he will play a pivotal role in sustaining the airline's operational synergy across the Asia Pacific region.

His experience of working in an economically integrating Europe will prove valuable as consolidation continues across Greater China, creating enhanced prospects for the airline industry in the region. As head of British Airways operation in Barcelona during the 1992 Olympics, he is also well placed to develop the company's strategy for the Beijing Games in 2008.

Previously serving as General Manager for Spain and Portugal and Country Manager for Romania, Mr. Suarez has enjoyed a distinguished career with British Airways, holding a number of senior management positions over the last 18 years.

Mr. Suarez joined the company in Madrid in 1983 and was later transferred to London to join the Management Development Programme. With London as his base, Mr. Suarez completed short and mid term postings in 14 different countries and obtained an MBA from IESE business school (Spain) in 2000.

"Fernando's track record as an integral player within the British Airways network, coupled with his extensive experience in cross-country management will ensure that British Airways continues to move forward in a region with multifarious opportunities", said Jenny Lourey, Area General Manager Asia Pacific.
