Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) today announced it will codeshare with South African Airways on flights from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Lusaka, Zambia, beginning June 1, 2002, on South African Airways Boeing 737 aircraft.
In commenting on the new service, Paul Matsen, Deltas senior vice president, International & Alliances, said, "With the start of this new service, Delta will codeshare with South African Airways and two of our other codeshare partners to 31 destinations in 21 African countries. Our relationship with South African Airways has expanded since we started codesharing in January, 2000, in a positive way for customers who choose to travel between the U.S. and Africa."
During his visit to Atlanta, the Honorable Minister of Transport and Communications Augustine Mwape, Republic of Zambia, said, "We are pleased to have this historical first Delta Air Lines service, with its South African Airways partner, between the United States and Lusaka.
This service will provide new opportunities for business and leisure travelers to visit our country and experience our people, our cultural, and the best view of one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls."
Delta and South African Airways currently provide daily, nonstop codeshare service between New York (JFK) and Atlanta to Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. Delta also codeshares on South African Airways flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London, and George, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; Windhoek, Namibia; and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
