Virgin Atlantic Airways' Premium Economy Class will celebrate its tenth birthday this month. Premium Economy was introduced in May 1992 for cost conscious business travellers needing more flexibility or for leisure passengers wanting more luxury. Premium Economy has proved so successful it has been imitated by many other carriers.
Passengers travelling in Premium Economy can benefit from a more flexible ticket, a separate Check In desk, priority baggage handling, meal service and duty free, a dedicated cabin onboard and a seat pitch of 38 inches. The airline will be unveiling a new Premium Economy seat this summer and an unrivalled inflight entertainment system offering a choice of up to 41 video and audio channels and games.
Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin Atlantic Airways, said:-
"Throughout our history Virgin has offered a unique travelling experience and revolutionised many aspects of air travel for both business and leisure passengers and Premium Economy is no exception.
"Premium Economy has proved popular not only with business travellers with budgetary constraints but also with leisure travellers who want more luxury and faster check in process and baggage reclaim. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and if that's the case then joining us in celebrating Premium Economy are all the other airlines that followed our lead."
Dee Cooper, Head of Product, for Virgin Atlantic, commented;
"We were the first airline to recognise that frequent economy travellers needed a better service. This groundbreaking product has set new levels of customer expectation in Economy and has changed the way people travel today."
Virgin Atlantic will continue to innovate and will be launch customer for the Airbus A340-600 this summer. Virgin Atlantic is working closely with aircraft manufacturers to pioneer new concepts in air travel.
