Shangri-La Announces New Hotel In Malaysia

18 June 2002

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts announces a new management agreement to operate an exclusive five-star boutique hotel in Putrajaya, 25 kilometres south of Kuala Lumpur’s city centre and within 20 kilometres of Sepang International Airport. Scheduled to open in October 2002, the 120-bedroom Putrajaya Shangri-La Hotel will be Shangri-La’s seventh property in Malaysia and will complement the newly renovated Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

Reflecting the hotel’s picturesque botanic garden surroundings, each of the hotel’s four floors will have its own unique nature theme (bamboo, palms, water plants and aromatic herbs). The hotel will be centred on a glass atrium with magnificent water features and lush vegetation. Guest rooms will average 40 square metres with most, including the four suites and presidential suite, having a spectacular view of the parklands and lakes, enhanced by the hotel’s elevated location.

With a distinct Malaysian decor, each room will feature high-speed internet access and a butler call system, further strengthening Shangri-La’s reputation for personalised Asian hospitality.

A luxurious spa concept, consisting of seven semi al fresco pavilions in a village-style set up, will be added to the property by the end of 2002. This will complement the third floor health club, featuring an outdoor ‘infinity’ swimming pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi.

The Putrajaya Shangri-La Hotel will offer international and Mediterranean cuisine in its two restaurants, and a range of meeting facilities with video conferencing facilities. In addition, the business centre will have three adjoining meeting rooms. Guests will be able to keep informed at all times with up to date details on the hotel’s facilities as well as the surrounding park through the interactive information kiosk near the Coffee Shop.

Owned by Pj Hotels and Resorts Sdn Bhd, the Putrajaya Shangri-La Hotel was designed by Malaysia-based architect and interior designer, Zaini Dubuz Richez.

Commenting on the new hotel, Giovanni Angelini, Shangri-La’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, said: ‘The Putrajaya Shangri-La Hotel reinforces our position in Malaysia as the country’s leading luxury hotel group with almost 3,000 rooms. Its panoramic setting combined with the strength of the Shangri-La brand will ensure the hotel becomes one of the most exclusive addresses in Malaysia.’

Located in the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) of the South Growth corridor, the newly developed city of Putrajaya is the administrative capital of the Federal Government of Malaysia. The 46-square kilometre city is built on the concept of “a City in a Garden”, boasts 13 parks, lakes and wetlands, and is in close proximity to nine golf courses. It is named after Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Allahyarham Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.

Access is conveniently provided through the North/South Central link, the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Highway, Damansara-Puchong Highway and the soon to be completed South Klang Valley Expressway, as well as the Express and Computer rail service links, which are due to be ready at the end of 2002.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2001. The company has nearly 20,000 rooms and 38 properties in the Chinese mainland, Fiji, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
