“GARFIELD IS COMING TO DUBAI” - BIN BEYAT

17 June 2002

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) announced that the licensed Garfield comic strip character would be performing for the first time in the region during the forthcoming Food Surprises week (20th to 26th June).

“Young and old alike in Dubai will have an opportunity to watch the lovable and well-known comic strip character perform crazy antics during daily performances in eight of Dubai’s leading shopping malls,” said DTCM Deputy Manager Events, Marwan bin Beyat.

Mr. bin Beyat noted that Garfield is a wisecracking, nap-taking, coffee-guzzling, lasagna-loving, Monday-hating, dog-punting, spider-whacking, mailman-mauling fat cat. “Garfield is the world's most hilarious feline and has mass appeal across all age groups and will prove very popular with the young and old alike,” he observed.

Garfield will be performing live in the emirate across eight leading shopping malls in Dubai with four daily performances of twenty minutes each - two in English and - two in Arabic.

Garfield the comic strip made its international debut on June 19, 1978, in 41 U.S. newspapers. Several months after the launch, the Chicago Sun-Times canceled Garfield. More than 1,300 angry readers demanded that Garfield be reinstated. It was, and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, Garfield is read in 2,600 newspapers by at least 263 million readers around the globe making it the most widely read comic strip in the world.

Garfield in costume is a larger than life version of the character we've come to know and love. It stands nearly 6 feet tall with a girth equal to his mirth! Kids of all ages light up when Garfield is near.

“Garfield comics are timeless,” said Louis Hakim, Regional Marketing Manager (Middle East and Africa) of Philips, the company sponsoring the event. “Garfield comic strips are quick and fun to read and revolve around the cat and his weight problem. The dry wit of that fat cat and the trouble he gets into, especially on Mondays makes for good reading,” he said.

“We will capitalize on the talent and experience of the lovable feline during Food Surprises to create a fun atmosphere inside the shopping malls where the Food Surprises events are being held,” Mr. Hakim added.

Garfield has appeared in TV shows, received Emmy awards, and has turned into one of the most visible multimedia comic characters over the years.

“What makes GARFIELD so lovable across different age groups is that the cat is overweight and has a number of human weaknesses such as the habits of oversleeping and not exercising which a lot of people also identify with and revel in,” added Mr. bin Beyat.

Garfield was named after its creator Jim Davis’s cantankerous grandfather, James Garfield Davis. Born in the kitchen of Mamma Leone's Italian restaurant in 1978, Garfield has grown into a worldwide celebrity. His antics with his feckless owner, Jon Arbuckle, his drooling doggy pal, Odie, and his beloved teddy bear, Pooky, bring daily laughs to millions of newspaper readers worldwide.

“Garfield's sassy brand of humor and quick-wit will prove popular with residents and visitors in Dubai,” concluded Mr. bin Beyat.
