Ten top local designers this evening (10 July) showed why Hong Kong is making its mark on the international fashion scene when they teamed up for a catwalk spectacular organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board
(HKTB).
The HKTB's "The Best of Hong Kong Designer Fashion", part of "Fashion Week" was presented to coincide with the inaugural HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale, the city's first fully-co-ordinated shopping festival.
Entertaining the 700-strong audience at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, the designers presented to visitors and overseas media some 114 ensembles, while a dance performance expressed the dynamic fusion of Chinese and Western cultures that makes the destination so popular.
Officiating at the show were HKTB Member Mr Patrick Yeung, HKTB Executive Director Ms Clara Chong and Hong Kong Trade Development Council Deputy Executive Director, Mr Frederick Lam.
Ms Chong said that the tourism and retail industries both have benefited from having visitors coming to Hong Kong every year to buy the latest fashions. "Hong Kong not only has become a trendsetter for the region, but is now increasingly under the spotlight in the international arena. I am sure that you would agree that the fashions on show here tonight truly demonstrate what Hong Kong has to offer as a destination: quality, creativity and diversity," she said.
"Our fashion spectacular rides on the stunning coat tails of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council's highly successful Fashion Week, which showcases to the world all that is unique about Hong Kong couture. Through international media coverage, Hong Kong's reputation as the 'Events Capital of Asia' is also reinforced," Ms Chong added.
Twenty-eight models wore the ensembles featured in four themes: "Modern Culture", "Stylish Professional", "Party Glamour" and "Absolute Vanity". The designers were Mr Henry Lau, Mr Garry Wong, Mr Barney Cheng, Ms Lu Lu Cheung, Ms Bonita Cheung, Mr Dorian Ho, Ms Cecilia Yau, Mr Walter Ma, Mr William Tang, and Mr Benny
Yeung.
"Modern
Culture" showcased garments expressing the energy, confidence, creativity and boldness of Hong Kong's younger generation. The 12 ensembles by Henry Lau were of woven denim, in Chinese kung-fu and Japanese kimono styles. Grey and dark blue were the major colours of the 12 outfits by Garry Wong, who had combined rugged leather with delicate chiffon to create sharp textural contrasts.
"Stylish
Professional" highlighted quality casual wear for office ladies. The 12 outfits by Barney Cheng were for high-flying professionals, while the light blue garments, lacy fabrics and knitwear by Lu Lu Cheung were presented in a theme entitled "Self Snapshot", to convey a sense of simplicity.
"Party
Glamour" presented clothing with ethnic and ageless flair. Bonita Cheung's 10 outfits, the styling of which was of Moroccan and French origin, were detailed with gems. The nostalgic pieces by Dorian Ho had motifs of "My Fair Lady", and were adaptations of designs from the 1920s and 1930s. Patchwork was the central concept for the 12 ensembles by Cecilia Yau, with a mix of blue chiffon, lace, Swarovski crystals and other fabrics.
"Absolute
Vanity" focused on elegance and femininity. The 12 outfits by Walter Ma were in black and gold. "Meditations" was the sub-topic for the 12 William Tang Oriental-style designs of black and white bearing Chinese ink and wash paintings. The 10 designs by Benny Yeung were of chiffon, lace and beads.
The 30-minute extravaganza attracted over 100 overseas media guests and correspondents from 20 countries and regions, including Mainland China, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, India, Japan, Korea, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Argentina.
