The Chingay
2001 Singapore promises to be a fun-filled festive experience for
families. For the first time ever, the entire area covering City Hall,
Padang and Esplanade will be transformed into a gigantic carnival
ground. Families can visit the Chingay Carnival @ Esplanade Park from 9
to 11 February 2001 and the Chingay Picnic @ Padang on 10 February 2001.
Chingay Picnic @ Padang
The Chingay Picnic @ Padang starts at 4 pm. Families are encouraged to
bring along their picnic mats and baskets and enjoy a relaxing afternoon
indulging in the festive mood at the Padang. A petting zoo comprising
about 60 animals of 12 species will also be specially set up to welcome
children to the picnic grounds. Here, children will learn how to select
and take care of pets from pet specialists. They will also get to feed
animals such as birds, dogs, rabbits and even goats and calfs. There
will also be interesting animal shows which include a performance by a
duck-herding dog.
While families enjoy their picnic on the Padang, they will be
entertained with performances put up by SPH MediaWorks’ artistes, face
painters and stilt walkers. There will also be an outdoor LED screen for
picnic-goers to catch a view of the Parade.
Chingay Carnival @ Esplanade Park
Across the Padang at the Chingay Carnival @ Esplanade Park, families
will be thrilled by the stunts performed by professional acrobats from
China. One of the breath-taking stunts visitors can look out for is the
“Leaning Tower of Chairs” where an acrobat will balance atop five chairs
placed zigzagged onto one another. Other highlights at the Carnival
include performances by foreign Chingay groups, games and quizzes
conducted by SPH MediaWorks artistes as well as food, drinks and
handicraft stalls.
Guest-of-Honour Dr Lily Neo, Member of Parliament for Kreta Ayer-Tanglin
GRC, will be launching the Chingay Carnival on Friday, 9 February 2001
at 6.30pm at the Esplanade Park.
“Live” Web Telecast of Chingay Parade
The public is strongly encouraged to watch the parade “live” along the
Parade route which stretches from the City Hall Building to Suntec City.
The parade will not be telecast on TV but those at home can catch all
the excitement “live” on the web at URL: www.chingay.org.sg on 10
February from 5.30 to 8.15 pm. |
