Qantas Plans for Industrial Action

Travel News Asia Date: 7 September 2001

Qantas said today it would continue to operate during a planned stoppage by airport, clerical and maintenance staff on Wednesday 12 September.

Executive General Manager Aircraft Operations, David Forsyth, said the airline would reschedule some flights and use larger aircraft on some services.

"We will do everything possible to keep faith with our customers and get them to their destination on the day," he added.

A group of unions at Qantas has called stoppages lasting from three to 24-hours in support of pay and condition claims as part of a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA V).

Mr Forsyth said that significant progress had already been achieved in the EBA discussions and Qantas believed that further negotiations would lead to a mutually-agreed outcome.

He said a group of Qantas staff would be working throughout the weekend to plan the strategy for operations next Wednesday.

"We will endeavour to contact all passengers in advance if their flight is going to be affected," he added.
