CONTINENTAL AIRLINES OPENS NEW C-3 CONCOURSE AT NEWARK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AS IT NEARS COMPLETION OF 'GLOBAL GATEWAY'
Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) today opens its all-new concourse at Newark International Airport as the centerpiece of $1.4 billion in improvements to the New York area's premier airport and only airline hub. The opening of the new concourse follows The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's recent inauguration of direct train service between mid-town Manhattan and the airport - the only such rail service available to a New York City area airport. Concourse C-3 The comprehensive expansion of Terminal C - Continental's main terminal at Newark - includes 19 new gates, raising the terminal's total gates to 58 - a 49 percent increase. Concourse C-3 features wide walkways and large, comfortable seating areas, offering customers natural light from skylights along the length of the structure. Concessions on Concourse C-3 will include brand names such as DKNY, Kenneth Cole, Borders Express and a Brooklyn Brewery Jazz Bar along with a distinctively international food court featuring A&W All American Food, Sarku and Famiglia. The new international arrivals capacity at Concourse C-3 augments international arrivals at Terminal B. An elevated, glassed-in walkway on C-3 will lead arriving travelers to a new customs and immigrations building scheduled for completion by early 2002. Newark International has become the pre-eminent airport serving the New York area," said Continental Airlines Chairman and CEO Gordon Bethune. "This major expansion ensures that the airport will continue to meet the needs of our customers for many years to come. Together with the Port Authority and our partners in economic development and state and local government, we have helped to make Newark International the most efficient and convenient international gateway in the United States and, quite possibly, the world." "I congratulate Continental Airlines for completion of this state-of-the-art concourse," said New Jersey Acting Gov. Donald T. DiFrancesco. "Complete with numerous shopping and dining choices, travelers will experience the highest level of comfort and customer service when they visit the new terminal. And now that the Port Authority AirTrain is up and running, they will enjoy an unparalleled level of convenience as they take to the skies and rediscover the joy of air travel." "With the opening of Continental's new concourse at Newark International Airport, the entire world will learn what we here in Newark have known for years: that Newark is America's Destination City," said Newark Mayor Sharpe James. "Newark International Airport is the New York region's busiest, and the only one that can be reached directly by rail, thanks to AirTrain service. The opening of this concourse will expand Continental Airlines' services at its hub, and bring business travelers, tourists, and visitors from across the globe to Newark. "Our city's largest employer, Continental Airlines has been a major partner in Newark's renaissance," Mayor James said. "I congratulate our partners at Continental Airlines on the opening of this magnificent concourse, the focal point of its $1.4 billion Global Gateway Project, and welcome the world to Newark." "The Port Authority congratulates our partners at Continental Airlines for rising above the challenges facing the aviation industry to complete this impressive Global Gateway project," said Port Authority Acting Executive Director Ronald Shiftan. "Global Gateway is an important part of the Port Authority's multi-billion dollar public-private partnership that is rebuilding Newark International Airport. The result will be wider roads to ease congestion, additional parking, expanded passenger terminals and dozens of new airport shops and restaurants." "We're delighted that more than $900 million in tax-exempt bonds arranged through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority in 1999 and 2000 was able to play such a major role in financing Global Gateway expansion and modernization improvements," said Authority Executive Director Caren S. Franzini. "The opening of the C-3 concourse is a large-scale example of the kinds of public/private partnerships that create jobs, grow New Jersey's economy and improve the state's infrastructure." Improvements to Main Terminal Building Connecting Terminal C's three concourses is a new, curved corridor with towering window-walls overlooking the terminal operations area. Located between Concourses C-2 and C-3 is Continental's largest Presidents Club lounge. Previously a traditional two-level facility for departing passengers (upper level) and arriving passengers (lower level), Terminal C's main structure has been converted to three levels: * Upper-Level Departures: To be used mainly for international check-in; formerly the domestic and international check-in level. * Mid-Level Departures: To be used mainly for domestic check-in; formerly the baggage claim level. * Lower-Level Arrivals: New space houses nine baggage carousels and ground transportation facilities for all arriving passengers. Throughout the mid level used for domestic departures, Continental has installed 72 new hybrid check-in stations, which include a touch-screen "eService Center" for use by the customer who wishes to manage the check-in process, combined with a full-service agent position for a traditional face-to-face check-in. Behind the scenes, Continental has installed a new baggage sorting facility that uses proven, reliable systems and technology. This baggage system will serve the entire terminal and replaces an older system designed largely for an airport serving point-to-point travelers, rather than for a major international connecting hub. A new ramp control tower for Continental operations personnel will provide an eagle-eye view of all Terminal C gates. This optimizes the flow of aircraft to and from the terminal by reducing congestion on taxiways. In addition, Continental this week opened a new Presidents Club lounge in Terminal A for customers flying to Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth. Other Global Gateway Projects Included in Global Gateway are sweeping improvements being made by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey throughout Newark International Airport, bringing the total value of the improvements to $3.8 billion. Also being added at Newark are these major elements: * Two new, enclosed parking facilities with space for 6,600 cars, along with a vastly expanded and improved system of terminal access roadways to facilitate traffic volume. * New modern cargo, ground maintenance and aircraft hangar facilities. |
