Politicians
and women's groups throughout Thailand are in a fury over what a leading
International Hotel chains website claims to be an executive summary of
what to wear when travelling to Thailand.
The section found at Marriott.com claims that no Thai men wear shorts
but also that "Among women, only prostitutes wear sleeveless blouses
and/or shorts".
These comments have been described as sexist, insulting and even evil by
women within Thailand.
A female journalist with a fashion and entertainment magazine in
Thailand commented, "That article (on the website) is so old it's funny
! Life may have been like that 100 or even 200 years ago, however these
days, women showing off some flesh are well accepted in society. These
days it's not so much the clothes you wear, it's how you wear it."
