Travel News Asia Date: 2 April 2001

Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) will start service from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Tokyo (Narita Airport) effective April 1. The new flight is Delta’s first nonstop, round-trip service from New York to Japan.

In celebration of this new flight, Delta will offer double miles for the purchase of a round-trip Economy Class ticket and triple miles for the purchase of a round-trip BusinessEliteä ticket for travel between New York (JFK) and Tokyo from April 1 through June 30, 2001. SkyMiles members in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean must pre-enroll for this offer by calling 888-558-3358 and entering code1006.

"Delta’s entrance into the New York-Tokyo market elevates the travel options for business and leisure travelers and shippers between the two regions," said Mark A.P. Drusch, senior vice president - network management. "With this new service, we continue to build upon Delta’s leadership position in New York, where we offer customers world-class service to the international destinations they most desire."

The new flight will be flown using MD-11 aircraft featuring the award-winning BusinessElite service. The flight will depart JFK daily at 10:45 a.m. and arrive in Tokyo at 1:25 p.m. the next day. On the return, the flight departs Tokyo at 3:15 p.m. and arrives in New York at 3:20 p.m.

New York-JFK is Delta’s largest international gateway, with service to 19 nonstop destinations in Europe. In addition to the service to Tokyo, the carrier will soon launch flights to Cairo, Dubai, and Tel Aviv. Last year, Delta added service to Lyon, Venice, Zurich, Aruba and Grand Cayman, and also introduced BusinessElite U.S. service on transcontinental routes between JFK and Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco.

"New York is integral to Delta’s growth strategy in the Northeast," said Drusch. "We’re committed to providing customers with the greatest access to all regions of the globe from our New York hub."

The carrier recently announced a $1.6 billion terminal expansion project for its JFK facility. When completed, two new terminals will offer customers enhanced travel conveniences, faster connections, and additional expansion of domestic and international flights.

BusinessElite, Delta’s premium cabin service, features sleeper-style seats with five feet of legroom, a unique one-touch fully electronic state-of-the-art control system, plus upgraded amenities such as personal in-seat videos.

Delta's goal is to become the #1 airline in the eyes of its customers, flying passengers and cargo from anywhere to everywhere. Passengers already choose to fly Delta more often than any other airline in the world on 5,183 flights each day to 354 cities in 65 countries on Delta, Delta Express, Delta Shuttle, the Delta Connection carriers, and Delta's Worldwide Partners. Delta is a founding member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance which provides customers with extensive worldwide destinations, flights and services.
