Adds second
daily non-stop Houston to Honolulu flight
Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) today announced that it will boost its
Hawaii service by 23 percent, adding a second daily non-stop flight
between its Houston hub and Honolulu effective February 15, 2002.
"Continental continues to experience strong demand for flights to Hawaii
despite the dramatic drop in travel since September 11," said Ron
Wright, Continental's managing director for Hawaii. "As part of our
continued commitment to Hawaii, Continental will double its daily
non-stop service between Honolulu and Houston and maintain 100 percent
of its flight schedule to the islands from other airports throughout the
continental U.S. and the Pacific."
"This is welcome news for Hawaii," said Hawaii's Governor Benjamin J.
Cayetano. "We're seeing demand for the islands pickup quite nicely.
Americans' confidence in air travel is growing, and people remain
committed to maintaining certain freedoms, including the freedom to
travel and experience places like our island paradise."
Continental's second daily flight #73 will depart Houston's Bush
Intercontinental Airport daily at 12:20 p.m., arriving at Honolulu at
5:05 p.m. Flight #72 will return from Honolulu daily at 10:10 p.m.
arriving at Houston at 9:35 a.m. the following morning. Flying time from
Houston to Honolulu is approximately 8 hours, and 7 ½ hours on the
return.
Doubling flights from Houston will add another 1,645 weekly seats in the
market and is timed to provide convenient connections for travelers
throughout Texas, the Southeast and the Northeast. Continental's Houston
hub offers 491 daily departures to 136 non-stop destinations.
"Continental Airlines' increased commitment to Hawaii is extremely
appreciated and beneficial to the entire State. It is also a strong
indication that the cooperative marketing activities of Hawaii's entire
tourism industry are having a positive impact among consumers," said
Tony Vericella, president and CEO of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention
Bureau.
He continued, "to ensure that we remain top of mind with travelers, and
to ensure the success of Continental's expansion, we remain committed to
moving forward aggressively with Hawaii's integrated, multi-faceted
marketing campaign in North America."
Continental will utilize a Boeing 767-400 ER for the new service,
carrying 35 BusinessFirst and 200 Economy customers. Every seat has an
individual video monitor and satellite telephone. The aircraft is
equipped with oversized overhead storage bins, adjustable winged
headrests, laptop computer power ports at every seat in BusinessFirst
and select rows in coach, an espresso machine and eight lavatories.
Continental currently serves Honolulu with daily flights from Houston,
Newark and Los Angeles. The airline also operates daily service between
Honolulu, Guam and the Marshall Islands. Continental Airlines is the
fifth largest airline in the U.S., offering more than 1,900 departures
daily to 122 domestic and 89 international destinations. Operating hubs
in Newark, Houston, Cleveland and Guam, Continental serves more
international cities than any other U.S. carrier, including extensive
service throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. |
