In response to
the Hong Kong SAR Government’s appointment today (1November 2001) of
nine new members to the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), Chairman The Hon
Mrs Selina Chow, JP, said it was encouraging news and that the new
incumbents with their respective areas of expertise would provide
momentum to Hong Kong’s overall tourism development.
“The government’s determination to promote the tourism industry has been
explicit in various Policy Addresses by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung
Chee Hwa. In the face of fluctuating economic conditions in recent
years, tourism has become extraordinarily important to Hong Kong,” Mrs
Chow said.
“Under the new ordinance, the HKTB Board will include members from a
broader spectrum of sectors. This will enable the HKTB to obtain
diversified professional advice from various parties when formulating
our promotion plans and strategies.
“Most importantly, all the new appointees are either leaders in the
travel trade or major partners from tourism-related sectors who will
certainly strengthen the marketing efforts spearheaded by the HKTB in an
increasingly competitive marketplace.”
Mrs Chow noted that in accordance with the Hong Kong Tourism Board
Ordinance that took effect on 1 April 2001, the HKTB Board would expand
from 11 members to the full complement of 20 members. The nine new
appointees will work closely with the existing members in offering
useful ideas for the benefit of the tourism industry.
