NEW INITIATIVES FOR ENHANCING INFLIGHT WELLBEING AND COMFORT

Travel News Asia Date: 19 February 2001

Ansett Australia has taken a series of proactive steps to ensure the wellbeing and inflight comfort of all its passengers – especially those on long haul flights.

The airline understands the demands long distance flying puts on passengers who have to deal with different time zones, sitting in one position for a long period of time and increased sensitivity to the effects of alcohol and caffeine brought about by altitude changes.

To help combat discomfort as much as possible, and enhance a feeling of wellbeing, the airline now plays a special video prior to take-off on every flight, that highlights three simple steps all travellers should take:

· Keep hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids – water, juice and non caffeinated soft drinks to prevent dehydration, fatigue and headaches. Minimise the intake of alcohol and coffee. Moisten the face to help reduce the drying effects of the cabin air.

· Eat lightly: Ansett Australia offers several light menu options which may help in avoiding indigestion

· Exercise: Gentle onboard exercises can help to enhance wellbeing. These include taking regular walks around the aircraft, regularly exercising the lower limbs such as legs, toes and ankles and slowly rotating the head and shoulders.

The advice is reinforced in Ansett’s inflight magazine to ensure as many people as possible absorb the helpful tips and, hopefully, benefit from them.

Ansett Australia has been serving Asia since 1993. The airline currently operates flights between Australia and four international destinations: Bali, Fiji, Hong Kong, and Osaka, including daily flights between Hong Kong and Sydney and direct flights between Hong Kong and Melbourne four times a week. Ansett Australia is wholly owned by Air New Zealand.
