An invaluable
collection of traditional Arabian ornaments is currently on display at
the Heritage Village in Shindagha as part of the ongoing 30th National
Day and Eid festivities organized by the Dubai Department of Tourism and
Commerce Marketing (DTCM) that concludes on 21st December.
"This collection of traditional ornaments provides a look into the
Arabian past and determines the taste of the people who owned them,"
said DTCM Manager Heritage Sites and Events, Awadh Al Seghayer.
He noted that the Arab designs primarily evolved from calligraphy and
were interlaced with patterns of geometrical moulds, leaves, crescent
and floral styles.
"In the old days Arabian jewellery was made of silver, usually studded
with pearls and other precious or semi precious stones and they were
mostly bulky and spectacular," remarked Mr. Seghayer.
The reason that the ornaments in the old days were heavy was because
Bedouin women received their ornaments as wedding presents and they were
their insurance in times of need.
The collection on display has been put together by Al Maria Jewellers
and comprises works of art with superior craftsmanship and elaborate and
fine detailing of ornaments.
Luminous gold chains, sparkling pearls and tinkling coins have for
centuries tempted the inhabitants of the Arab world and provided the
foundation for their jewelry. Today, these elements, as well as their
traditional designs, are drawing visitors by the thousands to the
Heritage Village in Shindagha. |
