Fresh off
securing a thrilling victory at the BMW International in Munich,
American golfer John Daly has confirmed his attendance at another
prestigious BMW event – the US$1.5 million BMW Asian Open which will be
held in Taiwan later this year (November 22 to 25).
Daly, the 1995 British Open champion, is currently enjoying a career
revival and has posted a string of highly competitive results throughout
2001. But it was his recent win at the BMW International Open on
September 2 after six years without finishing in first place that saw
him capture sports headlines around the world and catapult him back into
the World Top 100 at number 82.
His return to winning form has delighted his supportive fans who have
been eager for the hard-hitting golfer to return to the level he
attained when he won his second Major six years ago.
Daly’s participation in the BMW Asia Open is expected to be keenly
anticipated by golf enthusiasts and press alike. He will tee off at the
beautiful Westin Resort Ta Shee in Taiwan on November 22 and will
undoubtedly be seeking a place at the top of the leader board on
November 25. The American also admits to looking forward to the event.
“Playing BMW tournaments is always great fun and I already look forward
to the new BMW Asian Open in Taiwan,” said Daly.
But Daly is not the only headliner teeing off in Taiwan later this year.
Other big name stars include two-time Major winner Vijay Singh (Fiji)
who has a superb record in Asia. New Zealander Michael Campbell will be
returning to the course where he tasted victory at the 1999 Johnnie
Walker Classic and he’ll be eager to take home the silverware again.
England’s Nick Faldo, a six time Major winner, is hungry for victory
and, like Daly, is currently enjoying a resurgence in his career while
Italian veteran Costantino Rocca will certainly make his presence known
in the group.
The BMW Asian Open has been joint sanctioned by the Asian PGA Tour and
European Tour and will see 60 players competing from the European Tour
and another 60 players from the Asian Tour. The event will be the
penultimate leg of the 2001 Asian Tour but will open the European Tour’s
2001/2002 order of merit. |
