Northwest
Airlines (NASDAQ: NWAC) announced today that it will reduce its
system-wide flight schedule by 20 percent as measured on an available
seat mile basis. The carrier is taking this action because of this
week’s terrorist attacks on the United States and the resulting
reduction in passenger demand and new airport and airline security
measures.
The airline expects to begin schedule reductions immediately and have
the new schedule fully implemented by October 1.
In light of the schedule reduction, Northwest is reviewing its overall
staffing and other resource needs. The airline will complete this review
next week.
With annual revenues in excess of $11 billion and approximately 53,000
employees worldwide, Northwest Airlines is the world's fourth largest
airline with hubs at Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, Tokyo and
Amsterdam and more than 2,700 daily departures. With its travel
partners, Northwest serves more than 785 cities in 120 countries on six
continents. |
