The Hong Kong
Tourism Board (HKTB) has warmly welcomed the news that Beijing’s bid to
host the 2008 Olympic Games has been successful. This world-class
sporting event, HKTB said, would bring a substantial number of
additional visitors to China, which in turn would significantly boost
visitor arrivals and spending in Hong Kong, as a major gateway and
travel hub to the Mainland.
HKTB Chairman, The Hon Mrs Selina Chow, JP, said today (13 July) that
over the next seven years, the HKTB would help publicise the Beijing
Olympics through a variety of promotional activities. “We will maintain
close contacts with the China National Tourism Administration and the
Olympic committees in the Mainland and Hong Kong and from now until
2008, make use of every opportunity to promote Hong Kong when activities
or events related to the Games are held here or in Beijing,” she said.
Possible collaboration opportunities, Mrs Chow added, included
complementary promotions with various parties to build on the
considerable success the HKTB has already enjoyed over the past few
years in promoting multi-destination packages to Hong Kong and Mainland
cities.
As the next step, the HKTB will instigate discussions with the travel
trade to review logistical arrangements, such as ensuring there are
sufficient flights to enable visitors from all over the world to reach
Beijing via Hong Kong.
At the same time, Mrs Chow said, the HKTB would work actively with trade
partners to develop timely and suitable packages that could attract
travellers to stop over in Hong Kong when they go to Beijing for the
Olympics.
The HKTB will also work closely with the Government on developing an
overall marketing strategy for Hong Kong. Crucial periods are from now
until 2005 when Hong Kong Disneyland is due to open, and from then until
2008 when the Olympic Games are held.
“We intend to strengthen our publicity efforts and maximise this
wonderful opportunity to enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness in the
international market,” Mrs Chow pledged.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board was formerly known as the Hong Kong Tourist
Association (HKTA). The change took effect from 1 April 2001 and
reflects a change to the tourism body’s constitutional structure. Its
primary responsibilities for marketing and promoting Hong Kong as a
destination worldwide, and for providing visitors with assistance when
they arrive, remain unchanged. |
