November 11th is known throughout the world as Remembrance Day. At 11
minutes past 11 o’clock on the 11th day of the 11th month, many parts of
the world stop to remember those who have been lost in conflict.
There is probably no more peaceful place in the world than Burau Bay on
Langkawi. This group of 104 islands in the far northwest of Peninsular
Malaysia near the border with neighbouring Thailand, is the idyllic
island paradise, kilometres from the cares of the city and the conflicts
of the world.
Recent world events have changed the way many people view the world, the
ways in which they travel and the destinations they wish to visit for
recreation.
However, we can all contribute to making the future a brighter place for
all people. The Seashell Beach Café at the Mutiara Burau Bay beach
resort on Langkawi is but a humble café and bar beside the beach. But it
is also a place where holidaymakers from around the globe gather to
relax, have fun and to meet people in a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.
The associates at the café and the whole resort felt so strongly about
recent events that have affected global peace that they wanted to make a
lasting memorial. General Manager, Mr Razak Abdul Kadir said: "While we
maybe a long way from the trouble’s of the world, we are all affected by
what occurs in other places. Many of our guests come from other
countries and we wanted to create a symbol to remind all visitors that
even in places like Langkawi we care enough and wanted others to know
this".
He continued: "The hotel associates and guests have thought long and
hard about peace and it was decided that as music was an essential
component to the Seashell Beach Café and seeing though music unites
people, a peace guitar would be erected in the café. This will be a
permanent fixture and will be a lasting reminder that we all have to
make a contribution to making the world a more peaceful place".
Mr Razak added that as the message is important, the wording has to be
carefully composed. He announced: "As many of our guests are long stay
guests who come here year after year, we wanted to give them the
opportunity to make a contribution. As such we are launching a worldwide
competition amongst guests on our e-mail records, their e-mail friends
and anyone else who wants to be part of this project".
The memorial inside the Seashell Beach Café will be a 6-metre high
guitar and will include the winning words from the competition. Anyone
can enter the competition via e-mail, fax or letter and the rules are
simple: in 15 words or less make a statement on world peace that will be
a fitting memorial to all people. The words must be in English and
include "peace" and "Seashell Café".
All entries must be emailed to salbb@mutiarahotels.com or faxed to 603
2145 7822 or mail it to the Corporate Sales Office, Mutiara Hotels &
Resorts, c/o Mutiara Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Sultan Ismail, 50250 Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia. The competition closes on December 31st 2001.
The winner will be notified on or before January 31st 2002 and the prize
