Carrier will
establish a pet embargo to provide safe, consistent travel for pets
during summer 2000
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHICAGO, Friday, May 26, 2000 – United Airlines (NYSE: UAL) today
announced a pet embargo on all domestic and international flights
beginning June 15, 2000 through September 7, 2000. This embargo will
apply to all tickets purchased with United Airlines on or after May 26,
2000, for travel on or after June 15, 2000.
During this period, United will not handle live animals as checked
baggage, but will continue to accept live animals that are shipped as
cargo. Smaller pets will continue to be accepted in the passenger cabin
if they meet certain criteria.
United Cargo will accept animal shipments only from commercial animal
shippers or licensed pet breeders, which must be booked in advance of
the shipment. Extreme weather guidelines will apply, preventing cargo
shipment of any live animal when the temperature is forecast to exceed
85 degrees Fahrenheit at any point in the animal's journey.
"United is proud of its proven track record in ensuring the safety of
pets that we transport for our customers," said Tom Ficht, United
manager of Ramp Operations Planning. "We want to do all we can to
continue to provide safe and comfortable travel for the pets we carry."
To minimize any inconvenience, pets will be accepted as checked baggage
for customers who purchased tickets prior to May 26, 2000, and are
traveling on the return portion of their itinerary after June 15, 2000.
Passengers who are unable to travel due to this embargo will be allowed
to change their travel dates or cancel their itineraries without
penalty.

policies, may contact United reservations at (800) 241-6522, or access

employee-owned company, United offers more than 2,400 flights each day
on a network that spans the globe. |
