Millions of extra air miles on offer as LanChile and Aer Lingus board oneworld

Travel News Asia Date: 1 June 2000

Aer Lingus and LanChile today begin offering the full range of oneworldTM customer services and benefits - and to celebrate the oneworld airlines are offering members of their frequent flyer schemes additional mileage rewards in a special promotion.

They will become eligible for extra miles if they fly to three or more continents this summer. Members of British Airways’ Executive Club will each be able to earn up to 20,000 additional Air Miles - enough for more than 20 return flights to Paris or two return flights to Sydney at selected times of the year.

The promotion is expected to result in each of the oneworld members’ frequently flyer schemes distributing millions of "free" miles.

To participate, Executive Club members simply have to fly on eligible fares on any of the eight oneworld members to at least three different continents between 1 June and 31 August, 2000. Those flying to three different continents will receive 200 additional Air Miles. Fly to four different continents and the bonus Air Miles increases to 500. Five different continents means 10,000 extra Air Miles, while six different continents doubles that bonus to 20,000 additional Air Miles.

The addition of Aer Lingus and LanChile means four airlines have joined the original four founding members of oneworld since its launch a little more than a year ago. This represents amongst the most rapid growth of any of the world’s global airline alliances.

The two newcomers will take the number of destinations served by oneworld members to 559 destinations worldwide. oneworld carriers employ 269,000 people and operate fleets of 1,852 aircraft, carrying almost 210 million passengers last year.
