New 218-Room Property to Open In Pudong Shanghai in Early 2001

WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 2000 – Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE:MAR) will manage a 218-room Courtyard Hotel in the Pudong district of Shanghai, China, beginning in early 2001. It will be the seventh moderately priced Courtyard by Marriott hotel in China.

Owned by a subsidiary of the Shandong Provincial Government, the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Pudong Shanghai will be part of a mixed-used development that will also include approximately 18,000 square meters of office space. The hotel will be located on Dong Fang Road in the Liujiazui Central Financial District near the Dong Fang Metro Station on Subway Line Number 2. Surrounding the hotel will be a mixture of office and residential buildings.

Pudong is located between the Huangpu and Yangtze Rivers and is the focal point of China’s economic development strategy, with an emphasis on international finance and trade as well as the hi-tech industry. The Liujiazui Central Financial District represents the prime core of Pudong and is home to the Shanghai Securities Commission, the Shanghai Stock Exchange and several leading Chinese banks.

“We are delighted to see our Courtyard brand portfolio expand in China as well as to grow our lodging presence in Shanghai,” said Ed Fuller, president and managing director of international lodging for Marriott International. “We are confident that this Courtyard hotel will be a welcome addition to Shanghai’s travel-oriented infrastructure and will be a popular complement to our multi-brand hotel portfolio in the city.”
For dining and entertainment, the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Pudong Shanghai will offer two restaurants and a lobby lounge. One of the restaurants will include eight private dining rooms.

Recreational amenities include an exercise room. A lobby concierge desk, business center and laundry/valet services are among additional amenities.

For social events and conferences, the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Pudong Shanghai will have 725 square meters of function space, including a 320-square-meter ballroom and seven additional meeting rooms.

In August, the 317-room Shanghai Marriott Hotel Hongqiao will open, and the 362-room JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai is scheduled to open in 2001. In addition, the Marriott International lodging portfolio in Shanghai includes the 553-room New World Yangtze Hotel.

Aimed at business and leisure travelers who desire consistent, high-quality accommodations and services at moderate prices, the Courtyard brand was first introduced by Marriott International in 1983 in the United States. Over the years, it has been the leading choice in its lodging category.

One of the distinguishing features of all Courtyard hotels worldwide is the superior quality of the guest rooms, which are usually larger than rooms offered by other hotels in its segment, as well as in-room amenities such as a data port, large work desk and good lighting.

At the end of March 2000, there were 478 Courtyard hotels worldwide offering 67,800 rooms, all but 36 of which are located in the United States. In April, a 114-room Courtyard hotel opened in Graz-Austria. A 154-room Courtyard is scheduled to open in Hannover, Germany, in May; and a 100-room Courtyard hotel will open at Petra in Jordan later this year.

Outside the United States, Courtyard hotels are located in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Germany, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

The Marriott International lodging portfolio in China currently includes 21 hotels spanning its Marriott, Renaissance, Marriott Executive Apartments, New World, Courtyard and Ramada International hotel brands.
