ILFC Interested in the A3XX

Travel News Asia Date: 8 June 2000

International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) has confirmed its strong interest in the A3XX, indicating its desire to become a launch customer for Airbus Industrie's future very large aircraft. The world's largest new aircraft leasing company, which is based in Los Angeles, would acquire five aircraft with deliveries starting in 2006. In addition to ILFC, six major airlines have expressed interest in the A3XX.

"We believe that the A3XX will become the flagship of the 21st century and will introduce new standards in operational efficiency, passenger comfort, range, and environmental friendliness, thus becoming extremely attractive in terms of high return on investment", said Steve Hazy, ILFC's Chief Executive Officer. "We have had discussions with a number of airlines around the world on this subject. Airline interest and momentum for the A3XX are undeniable."

Commenting on ILFC's decision, Airbus Industrie Chief Executive Officer Noël Forgeard said that the expressed interest in the A3XX programme by Airbus Industrie's largest customer is a clear sign of confidence by the financial, as well as the airline community, in the consortium's all-new aircraft project. "We are particularly pleased to see ILFC willing to commit to the first truly new very large airliner in 30 years, thus confirming its market demand and the soundness of our vision for the future."

ILFC, which has ordered a total of 391 Airbus aircraft, has been launch customer for the A318, A319 and the high gross weight A321-200 single-aisle aircraft, as well as for the A330-200 in the widebody category. ILFC is also a major customer for the A340-600.

The A3XX is currently under development at Airbus Industrie. The A3XX-100, will be able to carry 555 passengers in a standard three-class configuration. Based on an entirely new design integrating the most advanced technologies, the A3XX-100 will offer between 15 and 20 per cent lower operating costs compared to the 747-400, while providing up to 35 per cent more seats and 10 to 15 per cent more range.
