BRISBANE AND ADELAIDE “AS THE CROW FLIES”

Travel News Asia Date: 7 December 2000

Virgin Blue’s inaugural Brisbane-Adelaide flight touched down today, heralding the beginning of a new era in air travel for South Australians and providing Queenslanders with another low fare business and leisure destination.

The airline brought forward its planned start date from February to December 7 following the early arrival of new aircraft and the swift completion of Adelaide Airport’s temporary terminal at the International Airport to cater for Virgin Blue passengers.

In keeping with Virgin Blue’s inaugural flight tradition, Chief Executive Officer, Brett Godfrey and fellow team members adopted a “destination theme”, dressing up as crows to highlight Virgin Blue’s “as the crow flies” double daily direct Adelaide-Brisbane service.

Brett Godfrey said, “We want to fly people where they want to go, not shunt them through either Sydney or Melbourne because it is convenient for that airline but not its customers. We are doubling the existing capacity on this neglected route and we are sure the direct service will appeal to business people whose busy schedules demand time efficient travel as well as leisure travellers keen to get their holiday underway”.

More than 2500 people took advantage of Virgin Blue’s special $99 one-way launch fare offer, with the equivalent of 15 of the 18 flights sold out in its first week.

Brett Godfrey continued, “Virgin Blue is excited about bringing low fares to Adelaide. We hope it will be supported by the travelling public who up until now have been deprived of affordable air travel, genuine customer service and a fun flying experience”.

“We are optimistic about expanding routes in and out of the South Australian capital from other key cities, sooner rather than later.”
