American
Airlines today announced that it has exercised the rights to purchase
six additional Boeing aircraft for delivery in 2002, bringing to 35 the
total number of aircraft that the nation's second largest airline has
ordered this year.
The order for the six aircraft includes two Boeing 777-200 IGWs and four
Boeing 737-800s. American currently operates 24 B777s, and deliveries of
an additional 21 over the next two years will bring the total B777 fleet
to 45 by 2002. The B737 fleet currently stands at 45. With another 67 on
order, the fleet will total 112. American now has a total of 108 firm
orders for new aircraft.
"These six additional aircraft fit nicely with our plans to look for
international and transcontinental opportunities where we have been very
successful in opening new routes or expanding existing services," said
American Chairman and CEO Don Carty. "Our plans for growth are guided by
demand and economic conditions, coupled with profitable opportunities
and our ability to properly staff the airline." |
