Expanded
Schedule Enhances Northwest’s Position as the Philippines Leading
International Carrier
Northwest Airlines has announced that it will increase service between
Nagoya, Japan and Manila, the Philippines from four weekly flights to
daily service beginning April 1, 2001. The flights will be an extension
of Northwest’s Detroit-Nagoya nonstop service which will expand from
four weekly flights to daily service on the same date and will
strengthen Northwest’s position as the leading international airline
serving the Philippines.
Northwest will operate Boeing 747-400 aircraft on the route featuring
its enhanced World Business Class service. Northwest and its partner KLM
Royal Dutch Airlines recently announced a new World Business Class
service providing more than 50 percent additional leg room, improved
seat recline, upgraded food service and many other improvements.
With the expanded service to Manila, Northwest will operate 21 weekly
flights between the United States and the Philippines – far more service
than any other airline between the two countries.
“The Philippines has been an important market for Northwest for more
than 50 years,” said Philip Haan, executive vice
president-international, sales and information services. “We offer
convenient one-stop schedules to Manila via continuing service from
Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, Japan. Northwest offers the most flight choices
for the business and leisure traveler.”
Manila was one of the original destinations served by Northwest when it
became the first airline to link North America to Asia via the “Great
Circle route” across the Pacific in July, 1947. Northwest serves 15
major destinations in the Asia/Pacific region with its fleet of 36
Boeing 747 passenger aircraft.
Northwest Airlines is the world’s fourth largest airline offering 2,600
daily departures with hubs in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Detroit, Memphis,
Tokyo and Amsterdam. With its travel partners, Northwest serves more
than 750 cities in nearly 120 countries on six continents. Northwest and
partner KLM Royal Dutch Airlines received Air Transport World magazine’s
prestigious Airline of the Year Award in 1997. Based on statistics
compiled by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Northwest is the most
on-time airline of the decade among the seven largest network carriers
and is the 2000 recipient of Air Transport World’s Airline Technology
Management Award. Northwest’s WorldPerks frequent flyer program is the
highest rated U.S.-based program reviewed by InsideFlyer magazine, the
leading authority on airline free travel programs, and in 1999 was named
the most preferred frequent flyer program by the readers of Time
magazine in Asia. WorldPerks received the special Industry Impact Award
during InsideFlyer’s 12th Annual Freddie Awards. In 1999, Northwest’s
nwa.com was chosen as best airline web site by zdNews.com and business
