PAL launches Cebu-Seoul
flights
Philippine Airlines will
start a new direct service between Cebu and Seoul, Korea on October 1,
2000, opening a route laden with fresh potential for Philippine
tourism.
Flights will operate twice a
week using widebody Airbus 330-300 aircraft, which accommodates 48
passengers in Mabuhay
(Business) Class and 230 in economy.
Departures from Cebu are
every Thursday and Sunday at 3:20 P.M. Arrival in Seoul is 9:15 P.M.
The return flight leaves
Seoul at 10:15 P.M., also on Thursdays and Sundays, and arrives in
Cebu at 1:35 A.M. the following day.
The
new service will serve primarily leisure traffic from Korea, for which
Cebu and its neighboring resort island of Boracay are popular emerging
destinations.
There
is also a growing market for Korean honeymooners, who are drawn to the
Visayan islands’ profusion of top-class tourist facilities.
Koreans
rank among the ten largest visitor groups to Cebu, with 5,839 arrivals
in 1999 or about 2% of all foreign visitors to the island.
The introduction of direct flights is expected to boost these
figures.
For
starters, it perks up a market that’s ripe for further development.
“The
demand is already apparent – majority of passengers on our
Seoul-Manila flights are actually tourists bound for Boracay while a
growing number head for Cebu – so direct services is the logical
next step,” said PAL vice president for sales David Lim.
Seoul
will be PAL’s fourth international link from Cebu after Tokyo, Osaka
and Hong Kong, as the flag carrier continues to develop services from
its main southern hub.
The
Korean capital is also served daily from Manila.
In addition, PAL flies four times a week from Manila to the
southern port of Pusan.
With
the launch of the Cebu-Seoul service, PAL will be operating 13 flights
a week to Korea – fully utilizing the Philippines’ entitlement
under the bilateral air services agreement with Korea.
