The Egyptian
based Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc has won this year’s
World Travel Market Environmental Company Award in recognition of its
environmental activities.
The award was presented to Sami Soghbi, President and Maha Saad, Public
Relations Director by broadcaster and environmental and travel
journalist John Craven at the World Travel Market Environmental
Awareness Day on Wednesday 15 November. The company was nominated for
the award by Middle East Travel, one of the leading travel trade
publications in the Middle East.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide is playing a leading role in
preserving some of the world’s most famous coral reefs on the Red Sea.
Two of their hotels – The Sheraton Miramar and Sheraton Soma Bay, both
on the Red Sea – have formed ‘green teams’ to examine all aspects of
their operations, from water and energy conservation to solid waste
disposal and beach cleaning. This will result in a standard operating
system for the whole coastal area which will be implemented by all
hotels.
Fiona Jeffery, World Travel Market exhibition director said: “The Red
Sea is key to the development of Egypt as a tourist destination and
Starwood Hotels have shown their commitment in protecting and preserving
the natural beauty of its reefs and marine activity. Their Award is well
deserved.” |
