Lufthansas
year-round service and Uniteds seasonal flights to provide
Trans-Atlantic bridge between Uniteds second largest hub and
Lufthansas largest hub in 2001
Lufthansa German Airlines and United Airlines have announced joint plans
to offer the first daily, scheduled, non-stop flights between Denver,
Colorado and Frankfurt, Germany, beginning in March, 2001. The new
Lufthansa-United service will make Frankfurt the second international
destination outside of North America served from Denver non-stop.
The carriers, bi-lateral alliance partners since 1994 and both members
of the Star Alliance network of airlines, announced that Lufthansa would
begin daily year-round service at the end of March, 2001, with the start
of the airlines "summer schedule." They also announced that in addition
to Lufthansas new service, United would offer daily non-stop service on
a seasonal basis, from June through October, beginning in June, 2001,
providing double daily service between Denver and Frankfurt during the
busiest travel period.
"Denver is a booming international business market, and tourism is on
the increase both to and from Europe," says Thomas Winkelmann, Vice
President, The Americas, for Lufthansa. "Together with our alliance with
United, this new destination will enable us to serve our customers in
the western United States even better than before."
"We are delighted that weve been able find a way to offer
Denver-Frankfurt service that will successfully meet the needs of our
customers, employees and shareholders," said Roger Gibson, Vice
President of the Mountain Region for United Airlines. "Weve long been
committed to finding a way to serve this important route, and the joint
plan we are announcing today with Lufthansa will turn that commitment
into not just one, but two new daily trans-Atlantic flights for the
people of Colorado during the peak summer months."
Lufthansas new service to Denver (LH 446/447) will be launched on March
25, 2001. The route will be operated with a state-of-the-art
four-engine, wide-body, 247-seat Airbus A340 aircraft. Flight 446 will
depart Frankfurt daily at 1:10 p.m., arriving at 3:40 p.m. local time in
Denver. The return flight will leave Denver at 5:40 p.m. The flights
arrival and departure times are scheduled to accommodate customers
connecting from United, United Shuttle and United Express flights from
throughout the Western United States and to enable fast, convenient
connections through Lufthansas Frankfurt hub to other destinations in
Europe and beyond. As on all its Trans-Atlantic routes, Lufthansa will
offer three-cabin service with recently upgraded First, Business and
Economy classes.
Uniteds Denver-Frankfurt flight will go open for sale on Tuesday,
September 12, with the first date of operations beginning on June 1,
2001, continuing through October 26, 2001. Flight 964 will depart Denver
at 8:55 p.m. and arrive Frankfurt the following afternoon at 2:35 p.m.
Starting June 2, 2001, flight 965 will depart Frankfurt at 3:20 p.m.,
and arrive Denver 6:05 p.m. the same day, and continue operating through
October 27, 2001. The route will be operated with Uniteds
technologically advanced Boeing 777, the largest and most modern
airliner in service today. Like the Lufthansa flight, Uniteds flight
will be timed to allow convenient connections from destinations
throughout the Western U.S. served by United, United Shuttle and United
Express. Uniteds flight will also allow seamless connections to
Lufthansa flights beyond Frankfurt. Uniteds service will offer three
class service, including 12 seats in United First with its recently
introduced "United First Suite" lie-flat bed product, 49 seats United
Business and 217 seats United Economy.
United and Lufthansa will "code-share" on the new Denver-Frankfurt
service, marketing each others flights as if it were their own.
United's two letter carrier code, "UA" will be placed on Lufthansas new
nonstop flight to Frankfurt in computer reservations systems and
Uniteds Denver-Frankfurt flights will also carry the "LH" code.
The United-Lufthansa alliance makes it possible for customers of both
airlines to access the networks of two global airlines while still
enjoying the seamless type of travel experience they would have if they
were flying on just one carrier. United-Lufthansa customers will enjoy
one-stop check-in at their first point of contact on either side of the
Atlantic, accrual and redemption of frequent flyer miles for flights
operated by either carrier in either Uniteds Mileage Plus program or
Lufthansas Miles & More program and conveniently located airport
facilities for quick connections. United-Lufthansa customers also enjoy
reciprocal access to each carriers airport lounges, and the recognition
and benefits of their silver or gold frequent flyer program status when
flying on either carrier.
United Airlines is the leading carrier at Denver International Airport,
Uniteds second largest hub. United and United Express offer a combined
484 daily nonstop flights from Denver to 105 destinations throughout the
U.S. and Canada. United employs nearly 9,400 people in Colorado and is
Denvers fourth largest employer, contributing more than $650 million
annually to the Denver areas economy. United Airlines Internet address

Lufthansas other U.S. gateways include Atlanta, Boston, Chicago,
Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York (JFK),
Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington. From its Frankfurt and
Munich hubs, Lufthansa provides one of the most extensive global
networks of any major airline, flying to more than 300 cities in nearly
100 countries. According to the most recent International Air Transport
Association (IATA) figures, Lufthansa carries more passengers worldwide
than any European airline |
