Airshow Inc.,
the world's leading provider of in-flight information and entertainment
systems, today announced that it has signed a contract with Cathay
Pacific Airways to install its Airshow 420 moving map display system on
49 of the airline's current aircraft and 4 new aircraft. The Boeing and
Airbus aircraft flown by Cathay Pacific are being upgraded from previous
versions of Airshow's popular moving maps, which plot the route of an
aircraft for passenger viewing.
"The Airshow 420 is the most up-to-date version of our map displays for
the commercial airline market," said Dennis Ferguson, President of
Airshow. "The 420 offers high-resolution graphics combined with CD-ROM
technology and enhanced storage capacity, allowing passengers to enjoy
the most detailed maps ever compiled for cabin displays. The system
takes information directly from the aircraft's avionics systems and
converts it into customized graphics and text."
Ferguson also announced that Airshow has been selected by Cathay Pacific
to provide a trial of the Airshow Network on a Boeing 747-400 aircraft.
The Airshow Network provides passengers with real-time news, weather,
sports, stock quotes and financial data in text form, as well as
web-based information from premium web sites. "By upgrading all of its
aircraft to the Airshow 420, Cathay Pacific now will have the technical
capability to add the Airshow Network to its on-board entertainment and
information offerings for passengers at some time in the future,"
Ferguson said, "and they are trialing that possibility."
The Airshow Network delivers what Ferguson describes as "Journey
Management," the ability to provide information to passengers that is
route-specific and delivered in real time. "With Journey Management, it
is possible to acquire up-to-the-minute information during a flight
based on triggers such as destination, altitude, time to destination and
aircraft location," said Ferguson. For example, on a Cathay Pacific
flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles the Airshow Network could display
Los Angeles weather, transportation, currency and other useful travel
information periodically during the flight. The system can be programmed
to display information on points of interest en route as the aircraft
flies near them. In addition, frequent updates from sources such as CNN
Interactive(R), Bloomberg(R), Intellicast(R) and SportsTicker(R) are
available over the Network. The Airshow Network can also deliver live
content from the airline's own web site or from premium Internet sites.
"We believe that a trial of the Airshow Network will demonstrate that
offering a wealth of in-flight entertainment and information provides an
improved flying experience for Cathay Pacific's passengers and a
distinct competitive advantage for the airline," said Ferguson. "Our
research shows that passengers on long flights want to stay in touch
with what is happening on the ground. The select business and travel
information and entertainment services displayed on the Airshow Network
make that possible."
Ferguson added that corporate jets have been carrying the Airshow
Network since 1996, and that the system is currently in operation 24
hours a day worldwide. Airshow has been offering moving map displays to
the aviation market since 1982.
Cathay Pacific's manager, in-flight communications and entertainment,
Winnie Lau, said, "At Cathay Pacific, we aim to give our passengers the
very best experience, both on the ground and in the air. We are
therefore very pleased to upgrade to the latest moving map display, the
Airshow 420, as well as trialing the Airshow Network, which will greatly
enhance our in-flight products."
Airshow, which serves the corporate aviation and commercial airline
markets, currently has passenger information systems in service on
nearly 4000 corporate aircraft and more than 130 airlines worldwide.
Airshow is headquartered in Tustin, California, and is a subsidiary of
Dynatech Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: DYNA), located in Burlington,
Massachusetts.
It is the leading provider of moving map displays and real-time
information for passengers, pilots, and cabin crews. More information
