Virgin Atlantic Airways has opened a new 5000 square foot Clubhouse at Hong Kong Airport. The newly constructed lounge has a capacity for over 100 passengers to enable it
to cater not only for the airline’s passengers travelling to the UK each year, but also those flying to
the airline's newest destination Sydney.
Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin Atlantic, said:
“The Clubhouse is positioned on the upper level of the Terminal with a sweeping view across the runway framed by Lantau’s
neighbouring islands in the distance.”
Due to the airport’s existing architecture the Clubhouse is split into two distinct areas, an open balcony and an interior cabin
space. Passengers are greeted and signed in by Virgin Atlantic staff at the reception podiums which are positioned within the
open balcony area, and give the first clues of the character of the new Clubhouse environment. Warm tones and natural
materials welcome the passenger and lead them along the balcony area into the new space.
The balcony environment reflects one of the most precious commodities in Hong Kong - a garden - with calming green tones
and a perfectly manicured English hedgerow which will allow passengers to relax while watching the busy daily routine of an
international airport.
The centrepiece of the lounge is the new bar positioned within the enclosed area. A contrast to the balcony, the bar area is
comforting and intimate with warm glowing tones, the combination of using local material detailed with a contemporary twist
reinforces the regional theme. Within the cabin there is a range of seating to suit any mood from dining chairs to relaxing sofa’s
plus a TV, games and internet browsing area.
Complementing the Freedom service onboard the aircraft - where passengers are able to eat what they want, when they want –
the Clubhouse menu offers freshly prepared individual dishes ranging from nibbles and light snacks to full main dishes.
The
lounge's business facility boasts a full range of office equipment including PCs, email and Internet, a photocopier, free fax and phone
facilities and a wide range of business amenities.
Virgin Atlantic’s design manager Hilary Clark, who worked with locally based architects Collaborate and London based W1 studio
on the Hong Kong Clubhouse, commented:
“The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouses are designed deliberately to challenge the conventions of the airline industry and to create a
different travelling environment. We look to provide a unique travel experience for passengers through the menu, service and
design of our Clubhouses.”
The Clubhouse is open from 08.30 until 23.30. Virgin Atlantic’s daily flights to Hong Kong depart from Heathrow at 21:30 and
arrive at 17:50. The return flights depart Hong Kong at 23:35 and arrive at Heathrow at 04:50 the following day. The Clubhouse
will also be used by all Upper Class passengers travelling on the airline’s new services to Sydney. These flights depart Hong
Kong at 19.20 and arrive in Sydney at 07.10 and the return service leaves Sydney at 16.00 and arriving in Hong Kong at 22.05 the
following day.
