Continental Airlines
is to add a fee for paper tickets purchased through non-U.S. based travel agents
when the travel itinerary qualifies for electronic ticketing.
“Customers overwhelmingly prefer the convenience of electronic tickets over paper tickets, with more than 90 percent of
Continental’s customers already using electronic tickets for their travel,” said Mark Bergsrud, vice president marketing
programs and distribution.
The airline
said it expects all domestic and international travel on Continental to be paperless by Dec. 31, 2005, two years ahead
of the International Air Transport Association’s recently announced initiative to eliminate paper tickets worldwide by the end of
2007.
Effective immediately, the fee for a paper ticket issued through agents located in Portugal and Spain is 20 EUR. In Ireland and
Italy, the fee is 25 EUR. The fee for paper tickets issued in Norway is 350 NOK, and in the United Kingdom it is 25
GBP. Beginning Nov. 1, 2004, Continental will add a fee for a paper ticket issued through agents located in Latin America (except
Brazil) and the Caribbean of 20 USD converted to the local currency.
For paper tickets issued in Asian and Pacific countries, a fee will be added on Jan. 1, 2005. In Hong Kong, the fee
is 400 HKD, and in Taiwan 1,700 TWD. The fee for paper tickets issued in Indonesia is 50 USD, and in Australia
70 AUD. In Japan, the fee is 5,500 JPY.
