Singapore Airlines (SIA) today became the first airline in South East Asia
to start scheduled, non-stop services between Singapore and Cape Town.
SIA has converted one of its thrice-weekly Cape Town services via
Johannesburg to a non-stop flight, reducing travel time between Cape Town
and Singapore by about two hours. Consequently, the service to Johannesburg
will continue as a turn-around flight.
On Wednesdays, SQ482 will depart Singapore at 0130 hours and arrive in Cape
Town at 0725 hours. SQ481 will depart Cape Town at midday and arrive in
Singapore at 0540 hours on Thursdays.
Flights on Mondays and Fridays will continue to be operated via
Johannesburg.
SIA's Executive Vice President Marketing and the Regions, Mr
Huang Cheng Eng, commented: "The Boeing 777ER is a very efficient, long-haul aircraft
and it gives us the capability to launch non-stop services to Cape Town.
It is yet another first from Singapore Airlines.
"These services will increase our capacity into South Africa and enable us
to expand tourism and business links between South Africa and Singapore,
and will provide a one-stop service for our passengers in North Asia, South
East Asia, Australia and New Zealand," said Mr Huang.
All flights to and from South Africa are operated by the Boeing 777-200ER
in a two-class configuration. SIA's Raffles Class SpaceBeds are fitted on
this aircraft, and customers in both classes can enjoy full audio and
video-on-demand on their KrisWorld personnal entertainment system,
including over 400 entertainment options, such as movies, TV programmes, CD
audio, Nintendo games and Multiplayer games.
With this non-stop flight to Cape Town, SIA will operate eight weekly
services between Singapore and South Africa: daily non-stop services
between Singapore and Johannesburg, with two of these services continuing
to Cape Town, and from today, a Wednesday non-stop flight to Cape Town.
This is an overall increase to South Africa of one weekly flight.
