Taj
Hotels has reported that there was no casualty or injury to any of the guests or staff members at any of the
groups hotels in India, Sri Lanka or the Maldives.
Only 4
Taj Hotels in the area were affected and suffered slight damage. The
hotels affected are the Taj Exotica Resort Bentota, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa Maldives, Taj Coral Reef Maldives and
the Fisherman’s Cove Chennai.
At
the Fisherman’s Cove in Chennai, India, only 8 villas on the seafront were affected. Water had entered these villas and damaged the furnishings, etc.
These villas are currently being refurbished and are expected to be ready by 6 January 2005. Water had also entered the Bay View Restaurant, but this was cleaned up the very next day and the restaurant has been functioning normally thereafter. The
other rooms, restaurants and other facilities at the hotel were not affected and are
now functioning normally. The debris on the beach was cleared on 27 December itself.
At
the Taj Exotica Resort in Columbo there was some damage to a few ground floor rooms, the Chinese Restaurant and the banquet hall. The power supply was partially
affected but was restored the very next day and continues to be fully operational. Some rooms on the ground floor which were affected by water, are in the process of being refurbished and will be ready by 31 December 2004. This hotel is otherwise
fully functional.
At
the Taj Exotica Resort & Spa in the Maldives, the resort did suffer some damage and will be closed for repair and refurbishment for a period of approximately 2 months.
The exact date of reopening is still to be advised.
The
impact at the Taj Coral Reef resort in the Maldives has been minimal and has not had any structural or major damage.
Maintenance checks are being carried out to restore the property to Taj standards,
before any new bookings are accepted. While some guests have stayed on,
the resort will only take new arrivals after 31 January 2005.
