Khao Lak devastated by Tsunami

Travel News Asia 28 December 2004

What was a very promising new resort destination, Khao Lak, is one of Thailand's worst affected areas of the devastating Tsunami that hit shores Sunday morning.

Khao Lak is just one hour by car from Phuket International Airport, and was booming just weeks ago as a new and favourite destination with those looking to get away from everything, and just enjoy the luxury hotels and pristine beaches.

Unlike other areas such as Patong Beach in Phuket, nearly all of Khao Lak's hotels are found directly on the beach, where waters come right up to the resorts gardens even during a regular high tide, so the sheer devastation that the Tsunami on Sunday has caused is understandably amongst the worst in Thailand, and gave unsuspecting guests and local residents very little chance of escape.

So far rescuers have recovered hundreds of people from rubble and the shoreline, and reports indicate that there are many more hundreds missing. What was once an idyllic hideaway, has become the most frightening of mortuaries and an area of almost complete destruction.

There are many small, privately run hotels, in Khao Lak but the major international hotels in Khao Lak include the Le Meridien, La Flora, and the Sofitel Magic Lagoon.

More to come from Khao Lak.
