The Whampoa Club opens its doors today, marking another significant milestone
in the progress of Shanghai's most talked about lifestyle and entertainment
destination, Three on the Bund.
In a contemporary interpretation of a Shanghainese restaurant and "tearoom", the
Whampoa Club reflects the urbane lifestyle of the city's past and present, while
Executive Chef Jereme Leung's cuisine is a unique tribute to the city's gastronomy.
Chef Leung is ranked with only a few other Chinese chefs in the world to be rated
as among the 'World's Best Chefs' by The American Academy of Hospitality
Science. Working with a number of Shanghai masters of traditional classical
recipes to learn the secrets of the region's cuisine, he has created his own
contemporary interpretation, using only the finest ingredients in a modern, clean
presentation.
"The concept has involved detailed research into the history of traditional,
authentic Shanghainese cuisine with assistance from a variety of invaluable
expert sources," he says. "It involved conducting dozens of trials and incorporating old recipes into my own culinary style."
Whampoa Club also has a strong focus on traditional Chinese teas, with more
than 50 specially selected exclusive blends that have been sourced from the
farthest reaches of China. Elegant traditional tea ceremony presentations take
place either at the table side in the main restaurant or, for more special occasions,
in one of the restaurant's three gorgeous tearooms which are adorned using
stunning colours and fabulous materials.
Whampoa Club seats over 200 guests and has five private dining rooms which
can accommodate separate smaller parties, or be configured into one large private
room for up to 80 persons - the perfect venue for celebrations, private dinners and
other occasions. There is also a "chef's table" whereby Chef Leung prepares a
daily menu.
With its modern take on art deco, using dramatic and luxuriant colours and
textures, Whampoa Club reflects a fantasy of glamour and ebullience. Located on
the fifth floor of Three on the Bund, the 1800 sq m space was designed by
celebrated Hong Kong designer, Alan Chan, in association with Hamish
Cowperthwaite.
According to Handel Lee, co-chair of House of Three Ltd, owner of Three on the
Bund, "The concept of Three on the Bund is to offer our guests an opportunity to
experience a stimulating and vibrant convergence of elegance, sophistication,
exuberance and style. Shanghai is rapidly gaining status as the most exciting city
in Asia and we're pleased to be part of that phenomenon." |
