InterContinental Sydney and Holiday Inn Rooty Hill
have been awarded the 2004 Water Conservation Achievement Awards for Outstanding Commitment to Water Conservation.
Both hotels won the awards having drastically reduced consumption since implementing water conservation strategies based on Sydney Water’s best practice
guidelines.
InterContinental Sydney applied a number of practical water-saving initiatives throughout the hotel as part of its recent $30 million refurbishment program.
The hotel has also provided valuable assistance in the development of Sydney Water’s Conservation Best Practice Guidelines for Hotels, a tool that has since been used
to audit a large number of hotels.
“By implementation of these operational systems, InterContinental Sydney has saved more than 30% of our original water consumption. As a result, we are more
efficient, we save money and most importantly, we are making a positive contribution to the environment,” said InterContinental Sydney General Manager, Jordan
Rodgers.
Holiday Inn Rooty Hill and the adjoining Rooty Hill RSL has achieved savings of 150 kL/day by implementing Sydney Water’s audit recommendations.
“These changes have been very well received by our guests, who are becoming far more vocal in their views regarding water conservation and the environment since
NSW began to feel the effects of the drought. Being recognised as a leader in water conservation is a significant achievement, and both our guests and our staff should
be proud of their community contribution,” Holiday Inn Rooty Hill General Manager, Dudley Lisle said.
Held last week at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo, the Water Conservation Achievement Awards recognise the efforts of the business community to conserve water and make a
significant effort to protect the environment.
“Each day, about 450 hotels in the Sydney region use 12 million litres of water. The efforts of hotels such as InterContinental Sydney to reduce this rate of consumption
is helping reduce the drain on one of our most precious natural resources, which is particularly important in a time of drought,” said Ron Quill, Acting Managing Director
of Sydney Water.
