Codeshare expands SriLankan Airlines services to 42 cities

Travel News Asia 21 May 2004

SriLankan Airlines has greatly increased its global services to a total of 42 destinations in 23 countries, with the introduction of no less than ten destinations in five countries through codeshare flights with British Midland.

Passengers on flights to and from London have the added convenience of rapid connections to three other cities in England (Manchester, Bradford, and Teesside), two in Scotland (Edinburgh and Glasgow), and Belfast in Northern Ireland. New codeshare destinations outside the UK are the Irish capital Dublin, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Brussels in Belgium, and Paris (which is also serviced directly by SriLankan Airlines’ four weekly flights to Paris).

“This has given us new gateways in the UK. Coupled with the increase of SriLankan flights to London up to 12 times a week this summer, these codeshare services open up a new dimension for us in the UK. SriLankan customers can now fly to a large number of points in the domestic UK market that British Midland travels to,” said G.T. Jeyaseelan, Head of Commercial at SriLankan.

British tourists are among the most frequent visitors to Sri Lanka, where tourist arrivals reached an all-time high last winter. All major cities in the UK have significant numbers of Sri Lankan immigrants who would also enjoy the convenience of the new codeshare flights.

“Through this codeshare, our flights to London have now become flights to the entire United Kingdom and Ireland. Also, the addition of services to Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris has increased SriLankan Airlines’ market presence in continental Europe, which will allow us to attract more passengers by providing a seamless service and more options for our customers,” said Jeyaseelan. “Passengers now have more convenient connectivity at airports en route to their destinations.”

Members of SriLankan’s frequent flyer programme Skywards would be credited with 500 Skywards Miles each time they fly a British Midland flight bearing a SriLankan flight number, from London to any of the ten destinations, or vice versa. Skywards members travelling on Business Class on these flights will get 50% more Miles, while Skywards Silver and Gold members are eligible for additional Miles for their respective tier, i.e. 25% for Silver and 50% for Gold.
