Emirates Honours first ever Security Aviation Management Graduates

Travel News Asia 20 February 2004

Emirates held its first-ever graduation ceremony for 30 successful Aviation Security Management diploma students on 18 January, 2004.

The year-long diploma course was carried out in partnership with Western Australia’s Edith Cowan University.

Emirates’ Chairman, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, and Professor Anthony Watson, Pro Vice Chancellor of Edith Cowan University, presented the Diploma certificates to the thirty graduates in Dubai, most of whom are Emirates Group employees.

Delivering the opening address, Maurice Flanagan, Emirates’ Vice Chairman and Group President, said: “In 2001 we signed a Memorandum of understanding with Edith Cowan University; the first initiative of this being to establish the year-long diploma in Aviation Security Management.

“Balancing work, family commitments and study is never an easy task so I would like to congratulate the first 30 graduates on the successful completion of the course.”

Professor Anthony Watson said, “ECU and Emirates Airline are working in partnership towards accrediting several programmes which are being conducted by Emirates Group Security. The innovative nature of this partnership appears to be a world-first in aviation security.”

"We have been greatly impressed with the quality and dedication of this group of security students,” he added.

The course in Aviation Security Management, which is also available to the public, involves home study and monthly tutorials held at the Emirates Aviation College, with examinations assessed and graded by Edith Cowan University.
